Raspberries that taste better than Autumn Bliss

Have finally given up on my Autumn Bliss. The taste is watery and gritty.
What varieties would you recommend?
TIA 😊

Joan J !

... but also I think it depends on the soil, and on the weather.

Could you get a mixed pack and see which is your favourite?
I did that when I planted rasps on my allotment - got a few of a few different varieties and trialled them to see which grew best, and which I preferred.

I'm disappointed in mine too, they don't seem to taste much of anything. I'm sure I had them in a previous garden and they were nice though.

LaundryWoes · 23/09/2023 21:14

I’ve got Joan J too, they’ve been lovely and sweet this year, though loads of teeny tiny ones.

User43082 · 23/09/2023 23:37

I'm giving up on them too. Autumn Bliss and the disgusting golden ones. They've spread everywhere and will be difficult to remove, and you can't replant with other raspberry plants.

PlimplePlop · 24/09/2023 07:51

Thank you all, I will try a few new varieties including Joan J and that purple variety linked above.

I've dug out my Autumn Bliss. Do you mean I should plant my new varieties in a different location in my garden? Thanks

I’m trying to work out what I have. Mine are yellow, and they’re long fruiting and I get a heavy crop each year. I will report back.

Is it due to lack of sun - that is what I was putting it down to with mine. I'm in West Scotland - and have decent number of rasps this year (first time) but not much flavour and they are struggling to ripen.

You're not supposed to plant raspberries anywhere where there have ever been raspberries in the past - to do with disease.

Ah I didn't know that, thank you

Possibly, but I was disappointed last year too and it was very hot if I'm remembering correctly?

I’ve got 4 varieties in order of taste I would say:
Joan J
Autumn Bliss
Glen Ample (summer)
All Gold

The top two are in a south facing enclosed courtyard so wonder if they taste better because of that.

User43082 · 24/09/2023 14:03

I'm thinking that summer raspberries would probably taste better than Autumn ones?
I'm so disappointed in the Autumn ones - a big fail, and have to be dug out.
