Pets and poisonous plants

I just read that sweet peas are poisonous to most pets. I appreciate this might be a fact but does anyone know of any stats that show the actual number of pets affected a year? Would it be a total over reaction to never plant them again ? I'm inclined to dismiss the risk as negligible and carry on regardless.

They are but you need to assess if your pet is liable to chew them. They aren't the type that are risky just to be near like Lilies (which can kill cats just being close by due to their pollen) .

With sweet peas I personally wouldn't as I have a pet that enjoys chewing at the plants but with my other pets I would think the risk was minimal as they have never shown any interest in the plants.

Other plants which are allegedly toxic to cats include daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, holly, yew, oleander, autumn crocus, cyclamen, hippeastrum, delphinium, foxglove, lily of the valley, chrysanthemum, hydrangea, daisy, ivy, azalea, grape vine, lily.

The only one which gets a mention in this list compiled by Blue Cross vets is lily

If I didn't plant anything that is toxic to child or dogs then I'd have concrete and nothing else pretty much.
