Evergreen tree IDs please!

Anybody have any idea what these two trees are please? A small blueish one (far and close up) and a green one (far and close up).

Plant ID apps have come up with different things depending on which app you ask.

I would like to know how tall they will grow so I can make a decision on what to do with them - if they get to be really huge it could be a problem.

Thank you!

My app says the green one is British Columbia red cedar and the blue one is not a plant.

Both are types of conifer.

Maybe Juniperus ‘Blue Arrow’ - for the blue one.

Some are dwarf varieties but your green one looks big? If not a small type, they can become huge. You can’t trim them as they’re only green on the very ends of the branches & ‘hollow’ near the trunk. There are better/nicer trees to have in your garden.

I’d say the green one is already about 7ft so I have a feeling that although I like it and the evergreen interest, I think I’d better get rid of it before I have to call in proper tree surgeons to deal with it.

I really like the blue colour and I have no idea if it’s a dwarf variety or just young. Does anyone have any recommendations for a bluey coloured plant that wouldn’t become monstrous?

The green one looks like a Leylandii - if so it will grow big very fast.

Not as blue, but you could consider Rosa Glauca (which gets Pink flowers and is very thorny) or Cotinus Old Fashioned (which is currently turning red).

Another one to consider if you are prepared to prune would be one of the dwarf eucalyptus - I’ve got Eucalyptus Pulverulenta Baby Blue which “only” grows to around 4m.

My app says the green one is British Columbia red cedar and the blue one is not a plant.

😂

My plant app is showing Junipers squamata (flaky juniper) for the non plant and Chamaecyparis lawsoniana columnaris (Lawsons cypress) for the other but I think my app is lying.

Tbh the blue doesn't look like a juniper and reminds me of one I had in my childhood garden. It was a cypress of some sort but slow growing. It was about 2 ft a few years before I was born and 8 ft when I was 18ys. It was never a nice shape but anything not green was very special back then, however ugly. I'm sorry to say your blue nonplant is an ugly shape 😬 The other green one is a nice shape and quite open, perfect for little birds.

definately a blue juniper (im in bc and have several on my property) but they do grow big and tall. the other looks like a cedar to me.

merrymelodies · 22/09/2023 04:46

I'm in BC too and these look very familiar! Cypress, blue juniper...

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/09/2023 09:24

A juniper for the blue and a cypress for the green. But that doesn’t help with your question because both have a number of different varieties with different growth forms.

Floopdifloo · 22/09/2023 12:32

Hmm maybe I’ll play it safe and take them both out then since it will be a problem if they get huge. Thanks for your help everyone! 😊
