How to take cuttings from this succulent?

I really like this succulent but it’s slightly in the wrong place as it’s growing over a drainage channel for the path , and I would like to take cuttings. I’m not sure what is is but it is hardy enough to survive in sea walls here (southwest) . Is it too late in the year? I have a greenhouse I could over winter cuttings in. I am pretty bad at cuttings so any step by step advice would be great!

I imagine if you chop it below a leaf node, leave it to callous for a few days then stick it in some water, it will root easily. Try a few and see how you go. You could then pot them up and keep safe for next year before planting out.

I don’t think it’s Hottentot fig (Carprobotus) as that is quite chunky, but it could be either Lampranthus or Delosperma (closely related). Take some cuttings about 5-6cms long, allow the stems to callous for a day or two, and insert in very gritty compost very slightly damp. You could try rooting in water too, some people seem to have luck with this method.

Thank you! There is loads of it so I will try both methods. It does flower and looks like the ones in the photo. Is cactus compost the one I want?

Cactus compost if you have it (with extra grit) or any multipurpose or potting compost with grit (about 50/50%) should do.

Thank you

You could also just lift it and move the whole thing where you want it. It has very shallow roots so you should be able to get some pieces with roots and divide it if you want more.

Ah ok. I might try cuttings first so if I move it and kill it not all is lost!
