What can be done with green tomatoes? I have plenty on the plants that I doubt will ripen. Any ideas appreciated.

You can pick them green, and they will ripen on a warm windowsill. I had to pick loads of green ones last year, and it worked!

I have put mine on the window sill to ripen.

I've picked ours green and they are ripening up nicely in our fruit bowl with a couple of bananas.

Make green tomato chutney
Green Tomato Chutney

1kg Green Tomatoes 500gms Onions
1kg cooking apples 680gms Demerara sugar
350gms Sultanas 50gms Salt
10 cloves 30gms Mustard Powder
15gms Ground Ginger Ltr Ready spiced pickling vinegar

Chop apples, tomatoes, and onions and sultanas into small pieces in processor. Put apples tomatoes. Put apples tomatoes and sultanas in pan with vinegar and crushed cloves, salt and ginger. When nearly boiling add sugar and onions cook for 31/2 to 4 hours. It is ready when spoon leaves a trail right across pan

They don’t taste so good if they ripen off the plant.

Are they outdoors? If they’re in a greenhouse it’s early to be worrying about not ripening.

It helps to ripen them if you remove a lot of the leaves.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 31/08/2023 10:08

Still ages for them to ripen on the plant - they can stay on the plant until the first frost.

Best to get them to ripen on the plant, remove all small ones and any showing signs of decay/damage, plus any flowers. If they are indeterminate, cut off the tops just above last truss and remove all leaves below bottom truss.
You can ripen them inside but I find the skins thicken up and really are only good for cooking.

Fried green tomatoes- so delicious. You can find recipes on line, but this is what I do

Slice fairly large tomatoes a little less than 1 cm thick, dip first in egg, then in corn meal flavoured with salt and pepper, fry over a low/medium fire about 10 minutes on each side, till the tomatoes are crisp and a little brown outside and tender inside. Delicious!!

Thank you.

They are outside, last night’s colder weather made them all flop hence the worry. I’ll leave over the weekend as it’s hopefully supposed to be warmer.

early september I remove all leaves off the plants most fruit then ripen.

AdoraBell · 31/08/2023 11:37

I made a chutney with them last year. Can’t remember the recipe now and Nickelbox’s recipe looks better.

Slide some sheets of tinfoil between the plants to boost any sunlight they get.. makes a huge difference!
Remove any excess leaves/branches to improve light and air circulation...
Dont overwater.
