Planting in someones memory

Hello. I want to help my friend plant something soon in memory of a loved one they've lost. Does anyone here have any ideas for a good plant (suitable for an indoor or outdoor pot and appropriate for beginners). I don't really know where to start. I don't know whether to stick with something simple or something more special.

Any advice at all??

TIA

There is a rose, called a 'memory rose'.

I'm no gardener and don't know how hardy / easy to grow it is.

I'm more inclined to plant a tree. Something that will be there for a very long time. I'd also be inclined to plant it in some Woodland or some public grounds that I could visit long after I'd moved house.

The Woodland Trust could probably help you with some advice.

Traditionally Rosemary is planted for remembrance. It is really easy to care for.

I agree with PP, planting something in a garden could be difficult if people move, why not approach local authority to see if they can plant a tree in a local park or somewhere similar?

And can be grown in a pot, which is what the OP wants - presumably so it can be moved if the owner moves.

Yes it does really well in pots. Ours is planted in memory of our dog who died last year

Hello, thank you for all advice! I ended up doing some research online and coming across Magnolia Stellata. They looked pretty and are small for the garden/pot. Unfortunately the local garden centre did not have any but the nice lady working there suggested Camellia Volunteer. It looked pretty when not in flower and also flowers in October so I thought it was nice as I gave it this week.

I will bear advice and rosemary in mind for future. Thank you all.
