Coastal gardening

Does anyone here have a front line coastal garden? Doesn't have to be on the actual beach like Derek Jarman's. But nothing between you and the sea but a bit of cliff. That kind of thing.

We are considering buying somewhere like this and I'm nervous!

Which part of the country?

faffadoodledo · 02/09/2023 10:12

South coast of Cornwall. Definitely at the mercy of south westerlies

If you're sheltered from south westerlies eg Looe kind of area all good. If on top of a cliff facing S or SW you'll probably be really limited.

Have a look at neighbors etc. Although there are also nano climates which can be very different within 20 m to 30 m.

The wind is the thing.

We're stuffed then!

If it's that brutal yes.

Is it on the open market?

faffadoodledo · 02/09/2023 18:33

It is. I'm quite cool to having a limited palette of colours and choices

Just bumping this gently in case anyone has any more positive stories! It's blowing a hoolie today so I'm going to take a look at the place and surrounding gardens and see what I think

@faffadoodledo how was your visit?

faffadoodledo · 30/09/2023 13:49

@Daftasabroom I realised there was an extra small field between the property and the sea, which is good. I have also chatted to folk in the village and am a little heartened. There is also a quite well renowned gardener living there (tho his property is in the shelter of the village proper), so I may try and pick his brains!
One things for sure we'll need shelter belt and perhaps some clever landscaping.
I think we're going to go for it.

Fab, that field might make all the difference.

Also bear in mind you may only see a frost once a year or even not at all. I think DS1 was five before he ever saw snow. Its worth checking out the US climate/hardiness zones because they are much more detailed than ours. New Zealand might also be great inspiration.

Ha! we live pretty frost free at the moment, not far from the plot but inland. I do think we're making a slight rod for our backs. But your NZ suggestion is a good one. And I'll be using lots of glaucous leaved plants I think
