Hydrangea

Hello All, hoping someone can give me some advice re: where to plant hydrangea. Just been given a white mophead variety but upon googling I seem to get conflicting advice. Some say morning sun and afternoon shade, others say full sun with just a little shade 🤦‍♀️

I have a few options in the garden, one is full sun from 12 onwards (can get v hot but should note I have an Acer there which seems to tolerate it). Other spot is under trees at the back, probably only gets a couple of hours morning sun and then in full shade for rest of day. Other spot is morning sun and then dappled shade. Where would you put it for best results (i.e. I don't kill it) 🤣

Cheers 😊

I'd go with morning sun then dappled shade, it's very hard to keep them wet enough in hot sun.

Morning sun, dappled shade. They are thirsty and get scorched easily.

Thanks both.... I suppose the other option would be to put in a pot? Or do they tend to do better in the ground? Sorry for all the questions 😊

It’s always easier to look after things in the ground. See comments about water need above.

I have two mopheads, one against the north wall of the house, so virtually no sun, the other against the S wall but completely in the shade of a large fig tree.

Not recommending deep shade, just that they’ll tolerate it.

My happiest hydrangea only gets about 1 hour morning sun a day, it is shaded for the rest of the day, it's in the ground and I dig a little bowl in the earth around it's roots so I can soak it and the water sinks right down and doesn't run off.

Thanks for this.... 😁
@Hohofortherobbers so like a moat around the roots?

They will scorch in hot sun, much happier in shade.

I grow all mine ( 8) in planters, then if they begin to look unhappy I can move them. Lots of water and feeding during the summer.
I move them to a sheltered spot in winter.

thanks all for the advice, I've planted it in the ground where we get morning sun and then shade for the rest of the day, fingers crossed its happy there :)
