How long does it take for browned acers to turn red again? 🍁

DH turned our acer’s leaves brown/green by feeding it plant food, not realising you’re not supposed to.

We stopped feeding it a few weeks ago, will the leaves turn red again?

I’m not sure that plant food would turn your acer’s leaves brown. Can you post a picture? And what feed was used? Sounds more like windburn or drying out. Is it in a pot outside?

Next year, as op says, it sounds like sun or windburn

How long have you had the acer? I Know a friend bought one this year and was surprised that the leaves are changing colour. It's perfectly normal for many acers to have leaves that change colours with the different seasons, and it may just be that the plant food was used at a similar time so you think that's the cause.

As for brown leaves that could be wind burn, as many acers divas and are very fussy about where they are planted.

Will an acer recover from windburn?

In most cases, yes. Thye might look a bit battered and sorry for themselves, and can drop leaves, but they usually recover. If it's in a pot then you can always move them to a more sheltered area.

Thank you. Do they need a feed?

It’s in a good sized pot, we got it earlier this spring. We were using normal Miracle Gro on it weekly Blush until I read that we shouldn’t! I’m out and about at the mo but will post a photo later tonight. The leaves are sort of green in the middle and browning towards the edges. 😔

If the leaves are brown and crispy around the edges, that sounds very much like windburn. We’re all waiting for the photos now …!

That's just the summer colour of its leaves. It will turn red in the autumn, then the leaves will fall. In spring the leaves will be the colour they were earlier in the year, in summer they will be like this.

It's normal, nothing wrong with it.

Many plants respond to sun by producing red pigment (which in combination with green look brown) as a protection. It’s not a problem.

Yes, feeding will definitely affect an acer's colour. Not sure how long it will take to revert to normal, maybe when autumn colours would change anyway? Won't affect the plant long term, at any rate.

I am not sure it’s the summer colour of its leaves. The acers at the nursery where we bought it still have fiery red leaves, and our neighbour’s acer is also still gloriously red.

So whether it was the feed or something else, it’s not looking no right. I wondered how long it would take for it to go red again. Will these leaves go red or do they have to drop off for new red ones to grow?

There are 100s of variations of acers and lots of colour / leaf variations depending on the type. There's a very good chance your neighbours acer is different to yours, and ever acer will react differently depending on the location it's planted.

The leaves will fall off in the winter months and start to grow back again next year.

Sarvanga38 · 12/08/2023 10:27

How long have you had it - long enough to have seen it's natural colour changes? It absolutely is the case that feeding can affect colour, but if it's a new tree to you they will have spring, summer and autumn colour variations - part of their great charm.

Sorry, I was assuming you'd had it a while and this was a new thing. I don't know that Acer specifically.

*its, not it's - FFS autocorrect and lack of edit button, I always see it just as I press the post button.😂
