Which plants in your garden do insects love?

Just been putting the washing out and the teasels, Verbena bonariensis, hyssop, Heleniums and Fuchsias were all covered in various bees. I'm currently planning a slight redesign of my garden and want it as pollinator friendly as possible. I'm on very sandy soil with plenty of sunshine so am including the obvious stuff like mint and carrot family, but rather than using lists on the internet I'd like to know what gets the most attention in your garden, particularly if it's not what you'd expect.

Thanks in advance!

Borage
Comfrey
Geranium rozanne

Teasles and hollyhocks.
Also sunflowers but they are a pest to grow because slugs attack them.

FizzingAda · 04/08/2023 16:11

Herbs, particularly borage, and hyssop, which a beautiful deep purple. Foxgloves. Daisy type flowers with flat heads. Buddleia , goldenrod.

Hedge woundwort - not that pretty but grows well in shady bits and the bumbles love it. Not sure you can buy seed though, ours is self seeded.

dubyalass · 04/08/2023 16:54

I've got plenty of hedge woundwort 😁

Hoping to add a scrambling rose somewhere. I have a cracking Ceanothus which they all loved back in the spring but my predecessor has planted quite a few things that don't offer much to wildlife at all so I'm getting rid of stuff.

I recently planted Hydrangea paniculata 'Wim's Red' after seeing it covered in insects in the garden centre. It's really brightened up a dark corner too.

Perennial geraniums. It makes us laugh because the bees literally form a queue to get to them.

Oldraver · 04/08/2023 16:59

Oregano, it self seeded and us now a decent sized plant, we love it for the flowers and smell

Flittingcandlewick · 04/08/2023 17:00

Ivy...especially late when nothing much else is flowering

RoyKentFanclub · 04/08/2023 17:01

Currently in the garden contemplating why there are so few butterflies this year. There are lots of bees though (honey and bumble). They’re mainly on lavender, lavatera and purple loosestrife. To be honest everything comes second to the lavender. It’s covered.

Porridgeislife · 04/08/2023 17:02

Lavender grosso. The bees absolutely lose their minds dawn to dusk for about 2 months.

Geranium Rozanne and Johnson’s Blue as already suggested.

Nannyfannybanny · 04/08/2023 17:05

Lavender, poppies, annual, they will love your soil, ornamental onions, rudbeckia, cosmos...easy to grow from seed
.

imed · 04/08/2023 17:09

They love anything blue or purple in my garden.

PrincessFiorimonde · 04/08/2023 17:10

Another one saying rozanne geranium.

Also penstemon, salvia and sea holly.

Was126orbustandmaybebust · 04/08/2023 17:12

Ceanthous is a haven for the bees and they love our raspberry, strawberry and blackberry plants too

Bibbitybobbitty · 04/08/2023 17:13

Lavender, geraniums & sedums in late summer are always covered

FrenchandSaunders · 04/08/2023 17:13

Not sure what this is called but the bees bloody love it 🥰

My hostas, but for chomping. There’s crushed egg shells and a copper band around the pots but they’re still full of holes.

ThreeKneeRepeater · 04/08/2023 17:14

And that’s a Japanese Anenome, FrenchandSaunders

ThreeKneeRepeater · 04/08/2023 17:16

*anemone

iknowimcoming · 04/08/2023 17:16

Currently lavender and oregano, oh and phlox. If you're in the market for a tree though I never cease to be amazed by how much the bees love holly tree flowers in the spring!

FrenchandSaunders · 04/08/2023 17:19

@ThreeKneeRepeater thank you

ApolloandDaphne · 04/08/2023 17:41

Catmint, salvia, rudbeckia, geranium are all loved by bees.

megletthesecond · 04/08/2023 17:57

French I have them too. Quite hardy which is a bonus.

Nannyfannybanny · 04/08/2023 18:04

The erygiums are full of bees

Newuname199987 · 04/08/2023 18:46

My hostas have had loads of bees on the flowers this year.
Borage.
