What is this plant, please?

It is growing up a wall that backs onto my aunt's garden. Is it something she needs to worry about?

virginia creeper? Fast growing, some people can be allergic, needs pruning regularly so it doesn't get out of control

Definitely not Virginia creeper. VC has maple-shaped leaves. This plant has bunches of five distinct leaves.

They're not showing clearly on the photo as displayed. I'll add a zoomed-in crop.

Do a google image search for Virginia creeper. You'll see plenty of pictures that look just like your plant. Leaves in groups of 5 and pointed oval shaped.

Pinkywoo · 31/07/2023 21:19

Yes definitely Virginia creeper

Definitely Virginia creeper.

Dilbertian · 01/08/2023 05:32

Oh! In that case, the plant that I - and several others - have been calling Virginia creeper is something else entirely!

This is the plant I've always known as Virginia creeper. The leaves turn gloriously scarlet in the autumn.

That's Boston Ivy.

Virginia creeper is Parthenocissus quinquefolium, which means “five leaves” referring to the five leaflets. The maple leaved plant you are thinking of is Boston Ivy, Parthenocissus tricuspidata (three points) which many people confuse with Virginia creeper because it shares the characteristics of being a self-clinging climber which turns bright red in autumn.
