What perennials can I plant for good flowers for the rest of the summer. Garden is whites, pinks, purples. It looked lovely in June but now it’s looking very dull.

...though beware, make sure posters are in the UK and of regional differences too.

Cosmos

FLOrenze · 30/07/2023 11:10

Late flowering chrysanthemum and Dahlias will flower well not late autumn.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/07/2023 11:14

Japanese anemones, hellebores and winter flowering white clematis which is evergreen (uraphyla Wintwr Beauty)

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 30/07/2023 12:02

This is exactly what happened to me but when I first started taking an interest in my garden. I have the same colour preferences as you too.

Without doubt, my garden looks best in May and June.

But I’ve learnt how to make it look good in July and August too (but not as good as it looks in May and June) with hydrangeas, salvias, agapanthus, dahlias (so much bang for your buck), penstemon, lychnis, roses, clematis, gaura, geraniums, astilbes, erigeron and caryopteris. Actually, the caryopteris isn’t really until August/September. Salvia, gauras, hydrangeas and abelia will go well into September. Also nerines for September.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 30/07/2023 12:05

Sorry - I missed that it was perennial suggestions you wanted and included shrubs too.

Axelotl · 30/07/2023 12:07

I have hydrangeas - one dark pink, 2 white.
A buddleia.

Coastalcreeksider · 30/07/2023 12:11

I bought a beautiful blue penstemon about a month ago, it looks lovely still and my other penstemon do pretty well too right into autumn and beyond sometimes.

Also rudbeckia, I have the yellow daisy type and they do spread.

I also have an everlasting pea, white, that comes up each year, it's currently in flower on the trellis.

Alainlechat · 30/07/2023 12:29

I also have a yellow and orange black eyed Susan's still flowering, trailing and non trailing begonias. My Jasmine is flowering but the wind is doing its best to deflower it.

Also some sunflowers about to flower and lots of daisy type flowers still going strong.

And petunias.

FourChimneys · 30/07/2023 12:39

Penstemon. Mine are usually in flower into November. Many hardy geraniums will have gone over but I give them a severe trim, throw on a handful of bone meal and by September they will have grown and bloomed all over again.

My neighbour has loads of snapdragons at the moment. Not the sickly ones from a mixed packet of seed but something a bit more lovely looking. I need to take some cuttings which he will be happy about.

I leave some shasta daisies to bloom naturally and trim others down in early May so they are blooming now.

Phlox grow like weeds here, I have to limit them a bit.

It is worth seeking out a nearby Yellow Book garden or similar and see what they have. Some have a plant sale too.

Sunflowersinthewind · 30/07/2023 14:28

Busy lizzies as well are great. And fuchsias

DelurkingAJ · 30/07/2023 14:31

Our sweet peas are rioting still (we deadhead them and I planted them late by accident).

WhataPlaice · 30/07/2023 16:06

I too forgot you asked for perennials, cosmos are annuals but they tend to self seed.

ThreeRingCircus · 30/07/2023 17:53

Hardy geraniums are great and flower for months. My hydrangeas and buddleia are looking good now, as are my dahlias.

This is my first year growing cosmos (I don't usually bother with annuals) but it's so lovely I'm going to grow some from seed every year as it's been great for filling in gaps in the border.

Covidwoes · 30/07/2023 19:54

I've got verbena and astroelmeria which are looking beautiful at the moment.

Beebumble2 · 30/07/2023 19:56

Annual Asters flower later and are in the colours you want.

Beebumble2 · 30/07/2023 19:57

Also Astrantia flowers all summer long.

BunnyBettChettwynd · 30/07/2023 20:41

This company lets you search on plant type and flowering month https://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/perennials/plcid.2/numitems.100/canorder.1/

TwitTwont · 31/07/2023 18:58

Ooh that’s very handy BunnyBettChettwynd. Thanks.

Eloweeese · 31/07/2023 21:37

My garden looks good at the moment. The plants flowering are

Lavender
Nepeta
Hardy geraniums
Salvias
Penstemon
Phlox
Dahlias

LoonyLois · 01/08/2023 06:51

My salvias and penstemon are flowering like mad, likewise the fuchsias. I’ve got one of three astilbes flowering too

Coastalcreeksider · 01/08/2023 10:56

Nepeta are my new favourite plant, still lots of colour, more bees than on the lavender and several little mint moths on it, never seen these before.

I bought a pink nepeta about three weeks ago and although pretty, it's the purple one I like the most.

Going to buy a couple more next year to go in the border.

minipie · 01/08/2023 11:05

I’ve got flowers on

Erigeron (flowers almost all year, bless it)
Lavender
Phlox
Salvias
Astrantia
Hardy geraniums- Rozanne and something similar but pinker
Oregano 🙄
a Hebe
Clematis - these vary a lot in when they flower
Hydrangea paniculata

I actually need more things that flower in May/June! Maybe we should have a swap.

orangina01 · 01/08/2023 11:54

I'm really intrigued that people have phlox flowering now, the phlox is my south facing bed has long since finished - guess it's regional variances? My nepeta has also finished but maybe I need to deadhead it (it's my first year growing that)?

The salvia is now flowering again and the lavender is having a second flush. My verbena is also now coming out!

I'll definitely look up some of the other suggestions though.

minipie · 01/08/2023 12:33

It’s possible it’s not phlox Blush off to check
