Is it too late to plant clematis? Trellis too...

Just as the title says really. I'd like to plant some clematis (and roses) but it's the end of July now. Am I too late? Should I wait until spring or just do it anyway?

Also, expandable bamboo trellis is significantly cheaper than the wooden ones but do theg disintegrate within a year or so?

Not too late for container grown plants which can be planted throughout the year, but Autumn or Spring are the best times for new plants to go in. Late summer is normally too hot/sunny and you'll need to keep new plants well watered. Also its easy to lose established plants through the winter and new ones can be quite sensitive. However I've just planted up two new beds as this was the time I had to deal that task, that includes two clematis and a climbing rose. Praying to the rain goddess and talking to them quite regularly. Also dug in plenty of rotted manure & compost. Good luck

Trellis is one of those things (IMO) that the more you pay for, the longer it lasts.

Thicker wooden trellis, treated regularly, will last decades. The cheaper stuff is fine if you regularly change things up, but I'd invest in better quality and stay on top of maintenance.

If you want support for climbers that can last decades, and it's onto a wooden fence rather than a wall, you could consider vine eyes with not too thin plastic covered wire. It doesn't look as nice as trellis but it's a good option in some cases.
