Help my shrubs are going black. The ones across the road have already gone black. Is there anything I can do to save them? Thanks

Sorry OP, but that is an ex-shrub. I doubt it will be green again whatever you do.

It looks more like an ex very clipped conifer to me rather than a shrub as such.

I don't know why they're going black. The second photo looks rather like it's been excessively clipped back (conifers are brown in the middle and many don't regrow if cut back into that) but if they were all healthy and then started going black that's not it.
The one at the front is a goner, tbh I'd get rid of the lot and replace with something else. Maybe have a look round your neighbourhood and see what looks healthy that's the sort of size and shape you want, to give you ideas?

It's a goner I'm afraid. That particular variety of conifer never seems to last all that long. Probably a delayed reaction to last year's heatwave.

That and the dry, windy spell a while back might have finished them off perhaps - I was on holiday late May/early June and returned to find a few plants desiccated.

So sad, thanks

Is there any way to fix the one that is still greenish

I'd get rid of them and plant some Hebes. They are hardy and have lovely colours. They will look good all year around.

Several of my neighbours had lovely hebes in their gardens that had been there a number of years, and last winter they all lost the lot. So hebes aren't particularly hardy in a bad winter.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/07/2023 09:55

I lost a hebe too this year, not sure if it was the cold or desiccation.

I think all you can do is leave it awhile and see if you get enough new green growth to cover the brown, and if it does recover, make sure any clipping after that leaves plenty of green on the outside.
I'd see this as an opportunity to get rid of them and replace with something nicer and more appropriate to the space. Trying to keep something that wants to be a tree down at shrub size doesn't really work long term. But as the middle of summer isn't the best time for planting, there's no rush to decide.

It's a really ugly conifer tbh. Replace it with something that flowers and supports bees
