I want an amelanchier tree, not a bush, of a decent size. Failed to find one locally ( Rugby) but willing to travel further afield to see before we buy, or looking for online recommendation please 🙂

We bought an amelanchia alnifolia, last year, and had to wait until September for it to be delivered. They need to be planted at the end of the growing season, as they are becoming dormant.

☹️ I want one now!
( but thanks for reply!)

Try Barchams or Deepdale, both online.

Pottedpalm · 21/07/2023 22:25

@Treecreature
Barchams are out of stock.
Do Deepdale deal with private as opposed to commercial customers? I only want one tree.

You won't get one now as it is not planting season and suppliers won't take the hit when it dies on you!

RHS have trees you can order, but not until late summer.

Try Chew Valley Trees, if they are in a pot they can be planted at any time but they’ll need regular watering.

I wouldn't bother to be honest. I bought one a couple of years ago and it's OK but a bit underwhelming. It's about 8ft tall now. Nice flowers in spring for a couple of weeks until the wind blew them all off just like my pear and cherry trees, then some nice red/orange leaves in autumn and again, just for a couple of weeks. In between it's just really meh.

Maybe I will appreciate it more when it's a bit taller.
It just doesn't feel like good value to be honest. I only have a smallish garden so everything has to earn it's keep. I wish I had bought a red Acer or burgundy cherry.

Pottedpalm · 22/07/2023 06:30

Thanks all; I was assuming potted trees could be planted any time.
maybe I should think again…

Order and plant all shrubs and trees in September, then they have all winter to settle. Crocus.co.Uk is a bit expensive but very good

Potted trees can be, but online suppliers tend to supply bare-root to avoid having to increases their prices to cater for the delivery charge for a large lump of soil.

Bare root plants have been growing in the ground until just before they’re lifted to send to you. A container grown plant may have been sitting in an undersized pot for a year or two.

Even a container grown tree is easier to plant in September or October - any tree needs a lot of extra water while it’s settling, and that can be difficult in a prolonged dry spell in summer.

Personal taste, isn’t it? I find a tree which changes colour through the year - pinkish new leaves, white blossom, then a green period, then autumn colour - more interesting than one which sits looking red all through the season.

There was one here when we moved in. The previous owners had kept it clipped as a small bush. Over 20 years I have been removing the bottom branches and now it is 15 foot tall and more like a tree but with multiple stems. I absolutely love it. Copper leaves in the Spring, then white flowers followed by red berries which the birds adore for their babies. Then green until Autumn when it goes the most glorious orange and red.

Thank you!

No problem @Pottedpalm

Crocus will have them on preorder and will send them out October time. Crocus have never failed me and not too badly priced.

Great choice OP. It's such a pretty dainty tree (or bush but mine is a tree). It's prefect in spring when your eyes are searching out colour. Plus it's attracted chaffinches to the garden which is always welcome.

Ornamental trees are showing some in stock. I've bought from them before. Quite expensive but good quality I think.

I bought an Amelanchier Robin Hill from this company a few years ago. It's doing well. It's just right for me - delicate foliage, lovely flowers and gorgeous autumn colour.
