Bought this 2 weeks ago . Repotted it when we came home . Multi purpose compost with blood fish and bones added . Normal watering when it hasn’t rained . It has rained a lot mind you . The plant is clearly unhappy and we have no idea why . Any experienced gardeners have any idea what we are doing wrong . Thanks .

Maybe overwatered if it's rained a lot. It's not in full sun is it? Cos they prefer part shade.

Hi . I don’t think it’s over watered , and it’s in shade . Our garden is north facing so plenty shade all day . At a push , I might describe our garden as a little windy as it faces onto the Humber Estuary .

we have noticed all the plants are getting a light battering from a stiff breeze on the windier days . It’s a new house to us so we haven’t got to know the ins and out of the garden yet . The Acer seems to be coping tho’ and I do know they don’t like wind .

I have a couple like this, mine are also in pots in a North facing garden with plenty of wind. I trimmed them up, cut off the dead and dying heads. They are now producing new flower buds.

I would prune it fairly hard to get rid of all those spent blooms and then keep it watered and fed.

Thanks for advice and will follow it . Just seems such a shame it’s literally keeled over and died within 2 weeks of buying it.

Half that plant looks healthy. Check the stems carefully of the wilted ones to see if they’ve snapped?

If you used new compost then it wouldn't have needed feeding at all for at least 6 weeks. Too much fertiliser is not good for plants. Agree with others - take the spent blooms off and let it recover.

One of my plants looked like that - half dead, half alive. It snapped from all the crazy wind! The remaining half is thriving.

Also, just to keep in mind that for plants in pots like this, you need to water even if it rains. Stick your finger in the pot - if it's on the dry side give it a water.

Hydrangea's like moist growing medium. They also have a big bushy top that can effectively create a rain shadow. In nature their roots would extend outside the circumference of their canopy, but they don't have that option in a pot.

That with the wind which causes plants to dry out faster, can create crispy leaves etc.
