I’m not a gardener so every year I buy a box of wildflowers from home bargains and sprinkle them in the borders of my bank garden.
I get poppies and other bright flowers but this year I’ve had a few of these growing. No flowers yet but each stalk has about 6/8 of these large leaves. They feel soft. Any idea what flowers they are ?
I tried google lens but none of the suggestions look like the leaves. TIA

My plant identification app says it’s called Annual Honesty 😁

These leaves are big, about 3/4 inches. Honesty leaves look quite small.

I thought Honesty too.Mia gathered some honesty seeds from a some plants near me two years ago, and sowed them in trays. the following year they were huge and bushy, about a metre tall, with lovely purple flower the bees loved. They need bit of room.

Leaves at the base are larger than leaves up the stem

Yes, honesty. The bottom leaves are that size. They're biennials and should flower next spring. I get them springing up all over the place, years after a friend gave me one seedling!

As with foxgloves, you can leave the ones which are where you want them and move or pot up those which aren't (there may still be an excess) - I need to get rid of some from the front of my borders or which are too close to other plants.

Thanks all.
I thought they would be like the others and only grow this year and die.
There are about 6 plants and spread out well so hopefully next year I’ll get some nice purple flowers.

They're pretty reliable. And of course if you leave them after flowering you get the silvery moon seed cases. I try to leave a few in the back of the border so they give welcome colour in spring and interest in autumn and through to winter. And start the next generation!Smile

Yes, it’s the seeds they’re grown for. It’s not actually the seed cases, but the septum diving the two halves. The seed pods are circular, and when they’re ripe, the two outer “lids” drop off, releasing the seeds and leaving behind a silvery translucent disc.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/07/2023 10:30

I usually have to give mine a good shake to detach the lids otherwise they stay on looking rather dull and manky. One of those little jobs that instantly brightens things up.

They started flowering a couple of weeks ago. So beautiful.

Oh good! Thanks for the update. Yes, they're good at this time of year, after many of the spring bulbs but before the summer flowers get into bloom.
And perfect position back by the fence to leave for the lovely seed heads to develop.Smile
