Garden being battered by high winds

ILoveMontyDon · 15/07/2023 10:09

Anybody else down south going through the painful experience of watching their garden being blown to bits?

It's so sad to watch.

Why is there always something? Slugs. Snails. Foxes. Squirrels. Aphids. etc. etc. etc.

I'm so sad.

We’re all of us trying to grow stuff that wouldn’t grow there naturally. It’s what gardening is. Of course it’s going to be difficult. Try to view every lost plant as a new planting opportunity.

I lost a huge double lilac in the March snow, along with the stunning purple clematis that came down with it.

Thanks -I know you're right. I'm just a bit disappointed. You never know -they might survive.

Sorry for your losses.

I tried to tie things down yesterday, but that hasn't stopped my runner bean flowers being blown off the plants. 😩

Wiccan · 15/07/2023 10:47

It seems to be constantly windy in the West Country these days I'm fed up with mending fence panels . And I've probably got very little apples left on my tree now . Yesterday I had to put nearly everything that isn't nailed down into our garden room . Bloody annoying !

Floralnomad · 15/07/2023 10:47

I’ve had to stake my pampas grass , he looks very sad but most of my plants have only been in since last year so they are all fairly young.

Wiccan · 15/07/2023 10:49

I get really depressed when I lose a plant they're like old friends 😔

Lovemusic33 · 15/07/2023 10:53

Most of mine are ok. I might have lost a sunflower or 2 on my allotment (I will check later). I have started planting mainly native wild plants/flowers in my garden which seem to survive the weather. My tomato plants have taken a battering and now have blight. I plant any big shrubs/plants along my fence so they have some shelter from the wind, so far they all look ok.

ILoveMontyDon · 15/07/2023 10:56

Sympathies to everyone experiencing the same. I know what you mean Wiccan. I was just thinking to myself that I need to stop being so emotionally attached.

If I lose my cafe au laits I will cry.

Plants need stress or they get lazy. High winds are a part of the natural system and serve a purpose.

Its hard though, like most things in nature it can be tough to watch.

senua · 15/07/2023 11:39

We are promised high winds this afternoon. I've been out this morning stripping my fruit bushes before the wind does!
Currently (see what I did there) topping and tailing the gooseberries.

I lost a huge double lilac in the March snow

oh no @MereDintofPandiculation , my lilac actually split down the middle last winter (very very sad as it was a beaut) the big trunk collapsed in a heap and died, and I'm now left with a largish stem which was the offshoot, still in the ground with a root and flopping to one side - I don't know whether to hoik it up with a tree stake and one of those rubber trunk supports, or whether it's a lost cause 😢

daisychain01 · 15/07/2023 13:21

It is very upsetting losing plants to these adverse conditions. I bitterly regret planting out my Morning Glory when I thought it was safe with the prolonged hot weather we had recently, and today it's looking very forlorn. I may have to try and get it back into the greenhouse to recover Grin

Hold on tight, all fellow gardeners, just a few more hours and hopefully it will have blown through!

megletthesecond · 15/07/2023 13:24

I'm trying not to keep obsessively peeking at my sunflowers. I need them for the birds this winter.

You're not wrong to be disappointed. But we have to find ways to keep optimistic and keep going.

They got a strong will to live, but it may not flower for several years. They start by sending up lots of vertical shoots and it takes them a while to get into flowering mood.

Welcome to my life! My garden is in one of the windiest parts of Scotland, where 40mph wind is considered a stiff breeze!
If this is a common thing where you live, then it's worth planting wind resistant plants and putting in wind protection/filtering measures. Otherwise, you just have to shrug, replant and carry on. I find that there is always a success to compensate for the lost things, too. This year I lost all of my coreopsis and armeria in the snow (it hadn't snowed here in 15 years and we usually have 2 or 3 frosts each year), and I was gutted, but an eryngium which had sulked for years has burst into life with the most gorgeous blue bracts, which made me feel much better. Also, I have enjoyed moving everything around and replacing sulky plants with something more enthusiastic.

Garden battered since the early morning here in Hampshire. Potted dahlias quite literally ripped from their roots. It’s been relentless. Been very fed up with the constant challenges this season.

You're allowed to be sad. It is sad....losing plants is horrible

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 15/07/2023 19:24

Im concerned about my dahlias. I have some planted in beds and others in pots. The winds have been so strong today, but at least they’ve had a good watering with the rain too. Of all the things I could lose, I’d be saddest about my dahlias. Actually, I’d wail if I lost either of my lilacs. Or my cornus. I’m another one who is overly attached to some plants!

megletthesecond · 15/07/2023 21:02

I watched some bumble bees hanging onto my teasles being blown over to 90° earlier.

ILoveMontyDon · 15/07/2023 21:49

Well- I'm glad it's not just me feeling fed up - it's my dahlias that I'm most sad about

Thank you for all the positive comments too. This is gardening - always bloody something. :-D I'll assess the damage in the morning.

Thoughts and prayers. x

I haven't been out to look at my poor dahlias, hoping for the best in the morning! Still quite breezy here in Cotswolds!
My ranunculus grew long ropy steams with big flower heads! All snapped in wind in the pots by back door! Sliver lining is they are beautiful as a cut flower in the kitchen now.

Im very attached to my garden and flowers too! 🌺

stevalnamechanger · 15/07/2023 22:43

I'm away and worried about my rose bushes , already lost large chunk a few weeks back

You've given me hope @MereDintofPandiculation thats good news, I've learned long ago to be patient so even if it takes a few seasons to recover, that's OK. there's plenty of other things in bloom so not too big a deal.

At least it's quite low to the ground (about a 45 degree angle to be precise) so will have swerved the high winds if nothing else.... Grin

daisychain01 · 16/07/2023 04:36

Will report back later with a damage and survival report @ILoveMontyDon Grin likewise love and thoughts to all, we've got this!
