What to do with these trees

I have a love hate relationship with these two trees at the bottom of the garden. Beyond is a road and then beyond that is views of the valley which we could possibly see from the kitchen with bi folds if chopped.

Any opinions welcome

How busy/noisy is the road? Do you need the trees there for road screening? I think I'd prefer a lovely valley view, but only if there's no chance of building happening to spoil it. Maybe put something smaller in to screen the road but enable sight of the view.

They’re cypress type conifers, so won’t reshoot from older wood. They are lovely trees, and won’t be enhanced by height reduction. I think your choices are 1) leave them 2) remove them 3)remove and replace with something smaller.

Personally, and if funds allow, I'd remove them. But then I hate conifers in gardens) They're only going to get bigger, nothing likes living under them and they block your view. I'd remove - and if you still want some sort of screening - consider lower and friendlier trees/shrubs instead.

They'll be a bugger to get out mind you - and you'll need to grind the stumps down if you want to plant anything else there.

I’m also not a fan of those trees but I’d rather look at them and have privacy than look at and hear a road.

The best course of action for these trees will depend on a number of factors, including the type of trees, their size, their location, and your own personal preferences. However, here are a few things to consider:

  • If the trees are healthy and well-maintained, you may want to keep them. Trees can provide shade, beauty, and value to your property.
  • If the trees are unhealthy or damaged, you may need to remove them. This can be a costly and time-consuming process, but it may be necessary to prevent the trees from causing damage to your property or posing a hazard to your safety.
  • If you decide to remove the trees, you can replant them elsewhere on your property or have them ground up and used as mulch. You can also donate the trees to a local nursery or arboretum.
Ultimately, the decision of what to do with these trees is up to you. However, I hope this information has given you some things to consider as you make your decision. Here are some additional tips:
  • If you are unsure of what to do with the trees, you may want to consult with a professional arborist. They will be able to assess the condition of the trees and recommend the best course of action.
  • If you decide to remove the trees, you will need to obtain a permit from your local government. The permitting process may vary depending on your location.
  • Once you have removed the trees, you will need to dispose of the stumps and branches. You can either have them ground up and used as mulch or have them removed by a professional.
I hope this helps!

Don’t underestimate the amount of noise those trees shield you from if it’s a busy road

HugoDarracott · 08/07/2023 04:28

They are rather large. We've had similar properly reduced in height which made them look better and I know our neighbours really appreciated it. But given they're shielding you from a road it might not be worth the cost. Even if you remove them at a cost of ££££ I think you will struggle to replace with anything else.

We had 4 of a similar size cut down, and two other trees reduced major trimming on a hedge. Experienced tree surgeon. He cleared the wood that we did not want, chipped the small branches.

Less than a days work. All clean and tidy by about 4.30pm
I would want a view and not feel walled in. Fence an fast growing hedge for privacy and noise screening.
Get advice and quotes. Keep it to yourself to make sure no one tries to List your trees. It has happened.

Thanks for all the advice. I’m on holiday so out of radar for a while. Only one neighbour and it’s one of the first things he asked us is when they were coming down. We aren’t doing anything in haste but having options snd advice is most grateful.
