Can anyone identify this disease(?) on my buddleia?

The young growth on my Buddleia has a strange growth abnormality, a bit like a virus. I can't see any aphids. The young leaves are misshapen with yellow-green patches, like some sort of hormone irregularity, but the older leaves are all fine.

What is it??? Thank you!

Mine is covered in buds now and the newer leaf growth is less badly affected. It's an old, well established plant though so hopefully strong. I've seen a few in flower now out and about despite the crinkled leaves.

Maybe they've had so many reports on the online thing they've closed it now.

I have had a look at mine and can't see any buds. I did only pot it this year so it may be that. Does anyone mind sharing pictures of how the newly formed buds look?

Long, thin and pointy, with (tight buds all along that look a bit like the buds on sprouting broccoli).

My scabby buddleia has pushed on through and has developed flower spikes now too.

Yes, that's a very good description, thousands of teeny tiny buds on a stem.

Hmm, I don't think mine has any 😩

Mine hasn’t got many yet and it does get covered in them, I think it’s still fairly early in the flowering season for it, don’t give up hope.

The RHS magazine are currently running a survey to track the spread of the capsid bug, a new pest (I think it was this one).

FazeleysRoyale · 27/06/2025 20:16

I have this on one of my four Buddleias. I reported it on the survey but the survey I filled in mentioned melon cotton aphid not capsids.
The silver lining for me was that one of the leaves had several ladybird larvae and an adult ladybird on the underside Smile I assume they were feeding on the aphids.
I’ve never had this problem before. Do we think this will happen every year ?

Ladybird larvae and adult on underside of leaf of Buddleia davidii Royal Red. Also the aphids !
