Lawnmower for large lawn

My flymo has bitten the dust. I've got a pretty big lawn, about twice the size of the tennis court in the local park.

Should I go electric again or petrol? And if I go electric, should I get one with wheels this time? I want one with a collection bucket this time because I am sick of raking the cuttings.

Get a robot lawnmower. Best thing ever

Won't a robot try to mow my geraniums?

People usually put geraniums in borders not lawns so could you either move them or just sacrifice them and get some more for your borders?

I mean that the robot mower will behave like my robot vacuum cleaner does and keep on going until it hits something. Which would mean it running off the edge of the lawn into the borders.

No. The people who install it put a non visible boundary in place so it knows where to stop.

Ah. I was thinking that it would be just like buying a roomba.

Smile it's a lot more sophisticated than that (and a lot more expensive) don't worry you're geraniums will be fine lol

If you go for an old skool mower (as opposed to robomower) look at the width of the cut. The wider the cut, the fewer passes you have to make. Here's a webpage explaining (not recommending these people particularly; it was just the first page I came across).

Lawnmowers - Choosing the optimal cutting width for your lawn

When it comes to cutting width of lawnmowers, there’s a wealth of choice in the marketplace, so what’s the difference and does it really matter? This article explains how to choose the optimal cutting width for your lawn.

@senua That makes sense, like using a bigger brush to paint the wall faster.

I recently visited a garden with a large (bigger than an acre I’d say) lawn. They had a robot mower trundling along and very neatly trimmed grass. We have a ride on mower for around a quarter of an acre and I’ll be pushing for a robot mower when that gives up the ghost.

Maybe look at battery-powered. I’ve got one (Bosch) as I didn’t want to be dealing with petrol and trying to navigate the lawn with a cable was a no-no for me!

Battery-powered sounds a plan. I like the idea of having no cables and also not having to wrestle with the starter cord.

They are so easy to use and not heavy to push - mine has 6 settings for height of cut. It even gives me lines (though it would be an improvement if I could walk in a straight line 🤣)

We've got a John Deere sit on. Very reliable

I haven't got the shed space for a ride-on.
