Hardy herbs for an English garden?

AnotherpostAnotherQuestion · 14/06/2023 23:01

So far I've planted a load of rosemary! Can someone give me some other suggestions for hardy herbs (eg not basil which I can't seem to grow!) for my beginners herb garden. Got some big raised beds in our new garden. Thank you in advance!

Mint (can run wild, so in a pot).

Thyme.

A bay tree.

(You can sink the pot into a bed).

My sage is taking over my herb bed. It's huuuuuge.

My rosemary and thyme both survived, even seemed to thrive, during the winter. My mint and oregano both disappeared, but then re-grew with the spring.

Parsley
Oregano
Coriander

Lovage, it is huge though. Not quite as huge as angelica.

What do use lovage for? It's one of those plants you hear about as really traditional and English but I've only ever known it used as a cordial mixed with Brandy.

I've always found chervil really easy to grow, even from seed. Much better than parsley or coriander which both seem to hate me.

I use it in cooking quite a bit, like you would parsley or celery leaf. It is going to be a fashionable plant soon, several popular chefs seem to be discovering it.

Thyme is a good shout. It grows happily without much attention, has beautiful purple flowers that the bees love, and is delicious on so many things.

I also have success with chives, mint and oregano.

My par-cel self seeds and grows huge! Thyme is good, so many different sorts. Bay, sage, mint (pot best), lemon balm (self seeds like mad), tarragon I’ve got in its third year.

discardedBox · 14/06/2023 23:19

Thyme, lemon thyme, bay, oregano, lemon balm, sage, parsley, chives, different mints (but keep in a pot or will take over)

Oh! Thanks for that. I'll put it on my planting list and try it.

As you have rosemary, I’d add a bay tree (or bay in a pot), thyme, mint, sage & lemon balm. I love being able to grab what I need out of the garden when I’m cooking! (Though more usually in winter when I’m doing casseroles, to be fair).

@JeandeServiette lovage is also the secret ingredient in Maggi seasoning.

Rosemary is surprisingly unhardy

I live in Canada - winters of -30. The herbs that come back every spring are chives, tarragon, thyme and mint….
never rosemary

CatherinedeBourgh · 14/06/2023 23:34

Sage, Thyme, winter savoury, oregano, mint, borage, lemon verbena, melissa have all survived -17 in my garden.

ichundich · 14/06/2023 23:35

Thyme, sage, marjoram, lavender, mint, lemon balm, parsley, rosemary. Marjoram looks particularly lovely when it flowers. Basil is not hardy.

CatherinedeBourgh · 14/06/2023 23:35

Oh, and bay and rosemary of course

Indeed re. rosemary not being very hardy, mine really suffered last winter when we had minus 9. Lots of brown twigs.

Runnerduck34 · 14/06/2023 23:36

Rosemary, smells great, and is a very tough plant

Ah! I'm going plant shopping right now. I do love the internet for things like browsing nurseries at midnight!

Fennel gives a bit of airy height above the lower level herbs, also verbena.

Wenfy · 14/06/2023 23:41
  1. Asian basil (tulsi) grows really well for my aunt in pots - she brings them in during winter.
  2. Wild garlic
  3. Coriander
  4. Mint
  5. Marjarom. Grows well but does tend to die off in winter

Tarragon - a must for chicken
