Hello

I have noticed that my red robin is looking rather sparse is it poorly?

I have fed it and watered it but it is shedding, any ideas?

Thanks Sad

It doesn't look great and there's a lot of leggy growth. Photinia tolerates hard pruning so if it was mine, I'd cut it back hard after flowering.

Ours is looking along the same lines but not quite as bad.
Was advised to water well and add tomato feed which has done the trick.
The old green leaves are sagging and going to drop off but the red are now flourishing and lots of new growth is evident.

What is the correct time of year to prune and how far back can you go?

The advice I follow is to prune after flowering. Where I work, I've pruned some over-large Photinia back to 1m stumps, then mulched, and they've come back very well.

Thanks everyone, i guess I can prune now and feed?

It is 6 feet tall, and iI have never pruned it!

It's a little late, as Photinia are best hard pruned in spring, but you could certainly tidy it up and shorten some of the stems to encourage fresh growth. Then if it's still leggy next year, hard prune about next March and feed it.
