Anyone up for a house plant chat?

I couldn’t find one by searching.

Is anyone else a lover of house plants? I’ve built up a nice collection including some rarer finds like a Pink Princess Philodendron and a variegated monstera. Plus plenty of monstera in general.

My current hobby is house plant propagation- having most success with monstera, various tradescantia, dieffenbachia, and maranta. Going to try a snake plant and the pink philodendron next.

I've got some String of Turtles (Peperomia prostrata?) growing in a bell jar terrarium, they're supposed to be slow growing but they're rampant. I've been meaning to take cuttings and see how they'd grow in a pot but I've not got round to it.

If I had room I'd definitely be interested in some of the other trailers.

I have to make a deal with myself not to buy any more plants when I leave the house!

I have a couple of lovely ferns, asparagus setaceus and another drooping one which are fab, but very misty/delicate and sometimes I like a plant making a bit more of a statement.

I've found it's all about the position of the plants, strangely many don't seem to like my windowsills, too hot, and prefer the interior of the room.

I had a fab peace lily, so beautiful, not overwatered, after 3 years almost exactly it just died. No idea why. I got another almost identical one.

If my plants start being a pain, I put them out on the patio which is a do-or-die situation for them (it's covered).

One plant I don't like is spider plants, I was given some lately though and the potting compost had flies in so they went to plant heaven via the patio as I can't be having flies everywhere...

I bought this a few weeks' ago for £3.50 as liked the variegation on it. It's on the windowsill atm SE facing (but shadowed by narrow path by lunchtime). I'm not usually good with houseplants, so I'm hoping it'll be okay where it is long-term - tell me if it needs any special attention. I have been watering it now and again, and so far, it's fine. No misting.

Have put out my coin plants (pilea something) as well as oxalis triangularis. I love splitting the former and giving them away. I have some growing in pots for the summer, in the hopes of gaining new additions to plant up before the colder temps. come.

I managed to kill my snake plant :-(

Bananas1350 · 19/08/2023 06:43

@mathanxiety oh no!!! I think they are the easiest. Water once every few weeks and ur done.

One of my hoyas has been in flower for a while. I love the way they open up.

This lovely hoya is suddenly on it's last legs and I've no idea why. Looks like root rot so I've repotted it and taken some cuttings. Gutted.

morelippy · 21/08/2023 15:28

It's up! I have a Peperomia Hope in a lovely rattan hanging pot near to our bifold doors!!

Am ridiculously pleased.

I also rescued a Blue Fern from certain death in Sainsbury's this morning which is currently slurping up some much needed water in the shade.

FindingMeno · 22/08/2023 21:33

Oh I've been lusting after a peperomia hope.
I'm running out of good houseplant positions though and also seriously tempted by a mistletoe cactus or one of those zigzag cactus ( the name escapes me at the moment)

FindingMeno · 22/08/2023 21:37

My latest acquisition is a bit of a poorly looking banana leaf fig which I am hoping I can nurse back to health.
And I'm trying to work out a suitable position for my reasonably big jade plant as I'm eyeing up a dragon scale alocasia for that spot.....

Does anyone put houseplants outside.. we have a west facing covered veranda so plenty of sun and light. Just wondered if anyone risked houseplants outside in all but the coldest weather?

I think my aspidistra would be ok, but Id like some big specimens palm shaped ones, and also some hanging. Anyone any ideas?

IcakethereforeIam · 23/08/2023 15:59

I've heard of people putting houseplants out, at least during the summer. I've been reluctant to because I'd worry they'd pick up pests.

I bought a Avonia papyracea at the weekend. Colloquially know as the bird poo plant. I think it looks more like catkins before they open up.

halfpasteleven · 24/08/2023 02:58

Any recommendations for a bedroom plant?
We have just redone our bedroom and I'd like a floor standing plant in it now.
One that thrives on very little attention/pure and total neglect if possible...

I told DH it would be fine to put the ones in his office outside (there's a covered terrace just next to his office) and he put them in the blazing sunshine, which burnt off all their leaves. Sigh.

I've often put them out for a few months under a tree or somewhere really shady when I lived in a really hot climate, where I spent almost no time inside in the summer so would otherwise forget to water them. They loved it.

Big snake plant like this https://prickleplants.co.uk/products/snake-plant

They're lovely and graceful, will survive even if lighting isn't great and only need water occasionally.

Hello my people! I’m a houseplant addict, so I think I’m in the right place.

@morelippy Yeah, houseplants do well outside. Having said that, I haven’t put any of mine out this year for many reasons - weather, time, energy. Mainly weather. I actually have 2 ancient and gigantic aspidistra plants who live outside full time. The sun got them a bit last year, but they’re still going strong.

I bought a Plant Rescuer box last week from GrowTropicals - it was about £30. Chose the ‘rare plant edition’ - got a couple of cuttings and 🥁🥁🥁 a very decent sized Monstera Albo! Wow. It was like my own personal Christmas!

halfpasteleven · 24/08/2023 22:33

Thank you @Reallybadidea
I'll take a look at those..

Anymore ideas for the ones that take in CO2 and release oxygen back into the air?
Thanks

SuddenlyOld · 28/08/2023 18:14

My first houseplant was a coleus when I was 5 or 6, followed by a mother of thousands, bizzie lizzie, tradescantia and spider plant. So I've been growing houseplants for over 50 years. Currently I have over 60 but I had to reduce the number quite radically as I'm moving house.

I have a lot of begonia and various calathea but mainly I have built my collection from plants that were around me as a child. Interestingly I do the same in the garden.

My longest lived is a dracaena which has been with me for almost 30 years.

The one I'm most proud of is my alocasia polly as they are quite hard to keep alive. Mine has even flowered

SuddenlyOld · 28/08/2023 18:18

Ref plants outside - The sun and breeze do them good and all my plants used to have patio time. Until my escargot was infested with caterpillars. So they stay in now lol

muchalover · 28/08/2023 18:26

Almost all of mine (and there are a lot) are on holiday in the conservatory for the summer and all have loved it.

Recently added a variegated fatsia which is doing ok.

I went to a houseplant shop recently and all their plants had moss covering the soil which looked lovely. I've had some moss in shrink wrap for a few years so am currently putting it on the soil but keeping and eye on whether it causes any rotting.

The oxygen benefits are very overstated I understand (and they only release oxygen during the day, as part of photosynthesis). So I would just choose a plant you like the look if!

I've had very mixed experiences putting houseplants outside, mainly due to my laziness at keeping an eye on the weather. My mistake this year was putting out a variegated philodendron to hang on a north east facing wall - forgetting that it would get direct sun some of the time. That plus wild temperature fluctuations. It dropped most of its leaves and is only just recovering now, a few months on.

Doing some cross stitch on the sofa just now and noticed a THRIP on my top. I really hope I brought it in from our outing earlier because I was really bloody close to my relatively new Thai constellation monstera (and other less expensive but beloved plants)!

halfpasteleven · 28/08/2023 21:39

Thank you @WobblyLondoner I'll take a look at that article

Thank you for the comments re houseplants outside. I think I may have left it too late this year, unless we have a spell of better weather. It's windy and cool here so not sure it's a great idea.

I would really love any suggestions for a trailing plant I can hang under a veranda.. so outside and probably needs to be a bit hardy..
