Can anyone help identify these caterpillars? They are destroying our apple tree this year.

Codling moth. You need to get Tree Grease and smear it on the trunk in autumn ready for next season. Stops the cycle.

Sorry it’s winter moth that you defeat with grease. Codling moth needs pheromone traps. Winter moth eggs are laid by females crawling up tree trunk!

Thanks. Do you think the dead bits on the ends of the branches are due to the moth/caterpillar or is that something else?

These aren't very tasty apples so we don't eat them anyway

Maybe they are cooking apples?

Yes they are cooking apples but don't have a nice flavour/texture even when cooked
