Old compost/soil - any good?

Have 2 tubs with old compost that has been sitting a few years often filled with rainwater - would i be able to use it to put at the bottom of some big plant pots - then fresh compost on top for new plants?

I would mix some slow release fertiliser into it if the expectation is the roots will get down into it. If you're merely using it as ballast for shallow rooted plants, obviously no need for added fertiliser.

Put some grit in too for drainage, it often gets very compacted.

I do, I've got a couple of very large pots and a couple of years ago broke up the soul that had been languishing in them mixed with good compost half and half and planted a blueberry and a blackcurrant, they're going great guns.
