Oh @WellTidy , hope I’m close to you, always on the lookout for nice pots!

We’ve also had rain overnight. I need to mow a bit of lawn so the dogs can use it so waiting for it to dry.

BestIsWest · 19/06/2023 10:38

I’m nowhere near Kent though!

WellTidy · 19/06/2023 11:00

That’s a shame Best as they’re free to a hood hole! I made the mistake of buying lots of small glazed pots, maybe one every few weeks for a year, probably because they were more affordable than just a few large ones bought all at once. It’s the large ones that I’m holding onto, as they have the most impact, but I hope the smaller ones will do somebody a turn.

I was late to plant my dahlia tubers, so they’re quite behind. Big enough now to go into the beds, so I am digging out my grow through supports to be able to get them in tomorrow. Seven out of eight came up, which I think is pretty decent.

WellTidy · 19/06/2023 11:00

a hood hole should have read a good home 😂

Bideshi · 19/06/2023 13:17

Kevin the tree feller came at 8 and took down a huge old horse chestnut on top of the gorge. He had already limbed it ready to fell, but there was still a fully fledged owlet hanging around in a hollow so we abandoned it until mum owl decided to kick out her very large baby. We've been watching and all has gone well.
Anyway, the felling was complicated involved very big chainsaws and a motorised winch. There were a couple of decent rhodies in the way, but they were recently planted so we just lifted them and put them back afterwards. Now there are huge discs of chestnut trunk to be dealt with and put in the (derelict) stables. Not by me, luckily.
Decent amount of rain, though still not really enough. Some things like roses are flattened but mostly the garden looks grateful. I'm expecting tsunami of weeds now: rain on warm soil 😕
Weeding after lunch.
I think that's sisyrinchum striatum. I wish I could grow them but no chance here. They like it dry and well-drained.

Bideshi · 19/06/2023 13:18

I like the idea of a hood hole. An essential component of a balaclava.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 19/06/2023 13:38

Ha to the hood hole!

I’ve been on the same journey (as they say on the telly) with pots. Fewer but bigger is the way to go, I think.

Having inspected the rain gauge, I can see that we didn’t have a great deal of rain but it was a useful start. I’ve been watering my young plants assiduously, but yesterday’s rain seems to have encouraged them to double in size.

InMySpareTime · 19/06/2023 14:45

Yesterday's rain has brought on all my courgettes, I got all excited at the sight of several courgette flowers at once, then realised that means several courgettes will all be ready at the same time. Looking forward to a summer of courgette-heavy cuisine.
Several cucumbers are setting already so they'll be a slight change. I can make a salad soon.
I'm getting a breakfast-worth of raspberries every day too, and plenty of herbs for dinner. I like this season, it's abundant and delicious.

BestIsWest · 19/06/2023 18:21

Not much doing here, did a bit of mowing and transplanted a few things from pots into the ground. Stupid hosta eating, rosebud munching dog was caught nibbling the jasmine which was just the excuse DH needed to get the cordless clippers out and raze it to the ground. I hate the nasty over enthusiastic flagstone lifting thing anyway.

catwithflowers · 19/06/2023 19:18

A trip to a lovely new (to me) family run garden centre resulted in some new plants. A beautiful DA rose, The Lady of Shalott, two lovely tiarellas and an echinacea. All planted out today. Feeling very happy with them.

Last night it rained heavily for the first time in ages and tomorrow is forecast for the same which is brilliant 🤩

NorthernChinchilla · 19/06/2023 20:13

It threatened rain, but alas didn't deliver.

Ridiculously, our internet failed at midday, and we STILL have no WiFi, so not been able to work. It's a wider problem as there's status updates on the provider's webpage.

On the upside, it meant I got 2 hours peaceful, heavy duty weeding with a little light deadheading. Got rid of more Fecking Brambles. Silver linings and all that!

BestIsWest · 20/06/2023 18:10

We had a trip out to a garden centre two miles away this morning. As we got there the heavens opened so we ducked in to the cafe for a coffee. It didn’t let up so we gave up and came away with some trailing things for a hanging basket and a half price tomato plant from their huge greenhouse.
I thought, oh good, at least the garden will have some rain but when we got home it was still bone dry! Unbelievable.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 20/06/2023 19:04

The storm reached us this morning. We seem to have had an inch of rain or more. Hurrah!

Have just down some foxglove seeds in the hope of increasing my stock for next year.

NorthernChinchilla · 20/06/2023 19:09

Tropical, flooding, town grinding to a halt rain here! For about 1.5 hours. No watering till Thurs...
And the neighbour has been out with his hose again Hmm

InMySpareTime · 20/06/2023 19:33

We had some nice normal rain all morning so the garden is green and happy again.
Today I cut seed heads off the irises and pulled up a load of weeds that sprang up after the rain.

NorthernChinchilla · 21/06/2023 07:02

Sigh.... discovered some bindweed growing up one of the plants I brought from my old garden. I guess the only option I've got is to dig it out, deep and wide, and hope for the best....?

I'd specifically kept them in pots over summer to check for this, but seems some has gotten through. It was on my peony, Bowl of Beauty.

catwithflowers · 21/06/2023 08:12

We had heavy rain for about 5 hours in Northumberland. It was amazing! The garden is looking so much better for it. Everything has had a really good soak and the sun is shining again today 😊

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 21/06/2023 08:45

We got some lovely rain on Monday and my barrel is now half full again from empty - huzzah! Yesterday I took (with permission!) some transplants from the neighbours garden that I tidied last week - large stemmed campanula bells, an aquilega, a pot of unidentified succulent, a hebe cutting, and a pot of purple starflower - not sure what it's proper name is. There were also some amazing peonies she said I could have, but I understand they're temperamental at best when being moved so I didn't bother.

A friend also brought me round a small pot of parsley to establish, a teeny lavender, two weeny sedum for the rockery, and another succulent. Plus a lychnis and a verbena bonariensis, but I have no idea what to do with those!

Tonight will mostly be spent weeding. AGAIN!

Zebracat · 22/06/2023 00:07

@LostAtTheCrossRoad I would go back for the peony. Monty says that’s a myth. Just don’t plant too deep..I have done nothing useful. But I did collect some berries for breakfast. My strawberries are pathetic, but the redcurrants and raspberries are excellent. May need new strawberry plants. And for my neighbours to cut back their forest.

BestIsWest · 22/06/2023 09:17

Going to do a little bit of weeding and planting out this morning then off to Aberglasney with friends this afternoon. Can’t wait.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 22/06/2023 10:09

Ooh. Aberglasney.

I’m going to try to move the biggest, heaviest pot in the garden. Wish me luck.

Zebracat · 22/06/2023 10:57

Good luck , Maud, keep knees bent.😀

Bideshi · 22/06/2023 11:04

I move peonies all the time. In fact I'm about to move ten of the peonies into a dedicated border. And I inherited them from my father's garden in the first place so they are already peripatetic. Go back for the peonies@LostAtTheCrossRoad . They're heritage plants - long lived and high-priced. What if the house goes to someone who just trashes them? They need rescuing.

Bideshi · 22/06/2023 11:07

Picked gooseberries and got my forearms scratched. Made a gooseberry tarte. Planted 'The Lark Ascending' in the rose garden. Did all the posts with Miracle Gro.

catwithflowers · 22/06/2023 14:19

@Bideshi ooh, I'm deliberating between ordering The Lark Ascending and Compte de Champagne. I just can't decide. I need a large rose for the end of a bed, big space to fill. Will have another look at both and try to come to a decision 😵‍💫
