Pickett fence Vs hedge

Hi all

We have a long garden and trying to create 'rooms' first bit has a wall and gate, 2nd bit has raised beds and some grass, and the last section has a greenhouse and more grass the garden is a work in progress but we want to have a fence and gate to keep kids out of that bit where greenhouse is and eventually a pond, however we're torn between hedging and Pickett fence?! For a hedge we would have to wait a few yrs for them to get established buying them at full height is costly. Does anyone have any thoughts on tall shrubs, evergreens that can be used as hedge for sectioning? I love the cottage style look so don't want anything to boxy..

Any ideas welcome

Thanks

If you're having grass in that section it might be difficult to mow/strim right up to a picket fence.

How tall would you want your hedge and what soil do you have?

Escallonia might be a good hedge. Pretty flowers in spring/summer.

Get a hedge. They are brilliant for wildlife and there are so many different types you can get. You could put a rose arch with a gate in the gap to stop the kids wandering through.

I like beech hedges but rose or Hawthorne are beautiful. A neighbour near us has a flowering currant hedge and it is stunning in spring. Basically you can use most things which grow as shrubs and a lot of those which are trees.

Have you thought about a low trellis with shrubs planted front. Just for while the hedge establishes , much cheaper than picket. Euonymus make a good hedge and are reasonably cheap . Rosemary also make good hedging plants.

Picket fence would take up less space.

Hedge might not be ready before children are too large to need it.

Rosa rugosa makes an impenetrable informal hedge and greenfinches like the hips.

A compromise might be a fence for an immediate barrier then grow honeysuckle, roses, tayberries on it. Don’t go for anything too vigorous like Clematis montana
