What can I plant in the gaps left when I pull out my forget-me-nots that have finished flowering?

How about hardy geraniums? I have bulbs and perennials that take over as the forget-me-nots fade.

Cosmos? Will flower all summer long.

Whatisitn0w · 01/06/2023 20:22

Thank you! I always mean to grow some cosmos as I love it in other people's gardens. I ordered some plug plants on Amazon (I was too late to plant seeds) and they arrived yesterday. I've potted them up and hope they'll grow!

I have got some geraniums in my back garden that à neighbour gave me. I could save them from underneath the brambles and put them in the spaces in my front garden 🙌. Thank you!

What bulbs do you have that flower in the summer. I have lots of spring bulbs but haven't ever planted summer bulbs.

Dahlias, lilies and gladioli are summer flowering bulbs

CatherinedeBourgh · 01/06/2023 21:30

Also some of the later alliums

Crikeyisthatthetime · 02/06/2023 11:16

I have dahlias and alliums mostly, and some day lilies. Also lots of tulips but they tend to flower at the same time as the forget-me-nots. There are loads of different alliums, all sizes and colours in purple pink blue through to white.
Oh, i just thought of sedum autumn joy (it's got another name now - telephium? ) That flowers later but builds up a nice clump. Look at geranium Rozanne, it flowers its socks off all summer.

Whatisitn0w · 02/06/2023 11:40

Thank you. These are great ideas. My neighbour has some nice hardy geraniums that she offered me a piece of last year. I'll ask her.
I love alliums but have never grown them myself- I'll put some in for next year.
I had a sedum but it hasn't taken very well- it's been swamped by some other things. I might try to see if it's still in the border and could be moved.

This hardy geranium started as a small piece of a plant gifted to me probably 20 years ago, still looking beautiful.

I've planted dahlia bulbs this year for the first time, at the end of April, I wish I'd put them in a week or two earlier but I was waiting for the spring bulbs to be done so I could use the pots.

Got another option, wild strawberries. They have spread all over my garden so they can be a bit invasive, but I've just been out pulling up forget-me-nots and the wild strawberries are there, ready and waiting. Great ground cover if you don't mind them spreading. And they are lovely on yogurt although very small fruit.

Ooo- lovely idea! I've seen them in cottage gardens in Devon and they look lovely. I could give it a try. My gardening style is very much see what survives and I'm happy for things to spread- I just have a bit of a cull every once in a while to bring it back under control.
Thank you!
