Everything is dying!

After some advice please.

We have a very well established garden with a number of large shrubs and trees growing along the fence.

This year four established plants have died. Starting at one end and working along. It started with a palm which I'm told was likely due to a late frost. Then the red robin died next to it. Now my ornamental cherry tree is looking dreadful and has barely any leaves and now another shrub next to that is dying. These are literally all in one line next to eachother.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be happening? They all seem to just be loosing all leaves.

Someone suggested it might be my neighbour (who has an issue with the height of our shrubs against the fence) poisoning them. Or could it be some kind of disease? My only other thought is that we had an extension about two years ago 2ms from these plants?

Any help appreciated xx

No it's the frost. Lots in mine has died to. It's shit.

Hazelnuttella · 27/05/2023 21:57

I don’t think frost would kill a cherry tree.
My first thought was neighbours too

Singleandproud · 27/05/2023 21:57

Could be the stress of last year's dry summer and a return of summer, however my red Robin is fine and I live in Norfolk and we barely get any rain at the best of times.

I think it's more likely the soil or water is contaminated with something, either intentionally or not.

Can you see any fungus anywhere?? It's a bit to coincidental that four things in a row are dying/ dead .

heldinadream · 27/05/2023 22:01

Could be honey fungus, but I am not an expert.

Tiredmummaoftwo · 27/05/2023 22:04

Pic attached. Everything in this photo up to the cherry tree is dead or dying!

My dad said this. Is there any way to get rid of it?

If it's the neighbour is there any way to test this? Thanks

I don’t think it’s weather related. I think your Red Robin at least should be fairly bullet proof. So that leaves fungus or neighbours, would be pretty dreadful if it was your neighbour though.

Tiredmummaoftwo · 27/05/2023 22:15

How would someone go about poisoning a load of plants next to a fence? I'm sure they have stuff growing on their side?

My friend has a huge cherry tree in her garden and it died this year.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 27/05/2023 23:14

You said you recently had an extension. How long has the patio been there? Could be root disturbance if the patio is new. If it is new, water everything well until the roots re-establish and cross your fingers.

We've hacked back some shrubs due to a series of heavy frosts, not for the first time. It's always on the same side . Also a plum tree. And a Palm we've had for twenty years. Fertilise well and be patient. The palm I've cut off all the dead fronds and bought that awful smelling liquid fertilizer which they love.

I have a cherry tree which isn’t dead yet but it looks like it’s dying. I also have a neighbour who can’t bear anything touching or overhanging the fence. She had someone in last year laying plastic grass and the people laying it cut out and removed several of the cherry tree roots which had grown through to her side. Cherry tree roots grow very close to the surface so fair enough - if I was having plastic grass laid I wouldn’t want big roots making it look look lumpy.
I think they have damaged my tree and possibly killed it.

Have your neighbours had any landscaping done recently?

tailinthejam · 27/05/2023 23:33

I once had a series of shrubs in my front garden all die like that, in a row, one by one from one end to the other. Never did get to the bottom of it, although I did suspect that it was some sort of disease that had spread from NDN's tree just the other side of the boundary, which was the first to die.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 27/05/2023 23:58

My neighbours and I have lost a lot of shrubs this winter/spring.
I think it was due to weather. Bloody annoying.

fguuh · 28/05/2023 00:14

Palm will be the frost, so many died around me including mine.

Cherry tree I'd be surprised if it was the frost, we have some small self seeded ones (along with several established ones) which were completely unaffected by the frosts.

I wonder if you can do a soil sample or something.

Our greenhouse was useless this winter and spring. Everything ended up all over the conservatory.
