Fence paint

Hi all

Need help choosing a fence paint

All our fences are brown BUT different shades, the previous owners also painted some panels a dark charcoal grey... Each to Thier own but I don't like black or grey fences, I have brown raised beds, a brown bench, trellaces etc so I was thinking maybe about steering away from brown and going for green?! I thought it might look a bit drab though, we have a very long garden so it's going to be a big task getting it all painted, I love the cottage garden look, we have lots of greenery in the garden and the theme in borders I'm going for is green white and purple

Thank you for any recommendations!

I did think about just adding climbers to the fence to hide the colour I don't like but I'm not having much luck with that so far

We had a shed with vibrant red woodstain that we overpained with a very pale blue/green Valspar paint. Covered the red completely with 2 coats, which surprised be given the huge colour difference.

Green needn't be drab if you pick a mid to light shade rather than a dark one.

Ours is Cuprinol shades in "willow", I really like it and the plants and leaves look lovely against it.

We've gone for Cuprinol Seagrass on our shed and planters, and Curprinol Stone on our fence. They look great together and it makes our plants really pop.

Just paint it all brown with creocote. It is so easy to apply and really good at soaking into the wood to protect it too, and a reasonable cost. You will thank me for it.

Creosote was banned years ago.

The only reason I’d avoid green is that it kind of blends in too much with plants/shrubs. I prefer a backdrop that makes what you plant stand out more.

Over the years, I have tried the various “garden shades” in alternative colours.

What I’ve found works best, for me, is a deep brown.

I like the Ducksback range of paint - find it lasts much longer than a stain. And applying it seems easier than a stain.

I said Creocote, not creosote. Creosote is widely available and legal to use.

Is it your fence OP?
you can’t paint the neighbours fence unless they’ve given permission and even then there’s always the risk that a sloppy paint job bleeds through to the other side.

Our fence is a light grey colour. It was previously dark grey (old owners) and I couldn't stand it! The light colour makes the garden look bigger and plants stand out. I've used Cuprinol natural stone in a past garden, but this one has far more fence so had to go cheaper! I think it's from Wickes or Wilkos. Bonus is it covers wall, so we've covered a half height brick wall too and it looks great.

I'm with you on the dark colours! I know they're very in but they're just not for me.

Sorry to hijack but can anyone recommend a paint that covers the green algae stuff on fences, would rather not faff around washing the fence first.

This exactly

Dark oak fence paint. Covers a multitude of sins. I'd suggest that for the OP as well.

I second creocote. B&Q sell it, look on the bottom shelf where they don't want you to find it (it's great value and great for preserving wood fences). You can get it in a light brown shade (nice) and dark brown, which really helps the fence to recede if you don't want to 'see' it. Good for those cheap dodgy panels. It was recommended by all the garden landscapers I chatted with recently.
