Tree ID please?

Very tall tree, it looks (to me) like it could be more than one type of tree, so am looking for clarification please. Leaf is a bit manky as it was in the bird bath.

Tree ID please?

Ailanthus is the name that slides into my mind, but I’m not sure. @yamadori ?

MonumentalLentil · 16/05/2023 20:46

Thank you, leaves look similar but so do some others I found online.
Still confused.

Can you post a pic of the tree?

I will try to get one when it's not raining, or at least what is left of it, neighbours have butchered it at the w/end, it was beautiful. Poor birds are very confused, a whole row of other trees have gone and they have nowhere to sit.

Budleja?

Yamadori · 16/05/2023 22:05

When you say tall, how tall was it? Roughly.

By the way, report your neighbours to the tree officer at the council - they could have broken the law by doing tree work during bird nesting season.

SwirlyShirly · 16/05/2023 22:05

Wouldn't let me add a pic.

Yamadori · 16/05/2023 22:21

The word 'walnut' just floated into my brain...

What do you think @MereDintofPandiculation ?

longtompot · 16/05/2023 22:30

It looks like an ash tree to me. I have a small sapling that's just sprung up in my garden, wasn't sure what it was but a neighbour has a huge tree in their garden. Turns out it is an ash. I'm going to pot it up in a pot as it's too big for my garden as I have many trees in it already.

LilyRed · 16/05/2023 22:53

If the leaf has a spicy/citrus smell it's probably walnut. Not much scent (green leafy smell) Then probably ash. Did the tree have black buds before leafing up? (ash)

Budleja?

No, because that’s a compound leaf made up of leaflets. Buddleia have simple leaves.

I’d dismissed walnut because I was thinking of common walnut, Juglans regia, and the leaflet shape is wrong, but it could be black walnut, Juglans nigra, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen.

Not ash, the tips are drawn out too much into a point. See my post above re walnut.

MereDintofPandiculation · 17/05/2023 10:55

This is ash. The leaflets don’t have the long drawn out tips of the OPs picture

Thank you! I can answer one question, it is very, very tall. The height is still there but they removed a branch which seems to have taken a very large part of the lower section. I don't know what they did entirely but it is possible to see their house through it whereas before it shielded us from their nosiness.

I think it has berries on it, a bit like black cherries, but will need another look. It is bare during winter.

I thought there was nothing could be done about destroying trees during nesting season? Just guidelines which no-one follows round here because they are more important than anything else. If that's not true I will report it as the house next to it took out a row of trees at the same time.

The law says that you must not recklessly or deliberately disturb nesting birds. So if you cut down a tree in nesting season you must have fully inspected and determined that there are no nests nor makings of nests

MonumentalLentil · 17/05/2023 20:35

I will contact the council. Already have as I filled out a TPO request, it was all I could find but will look into it a bit more.

Have taken some photos and phone just died so can't access them yet. It does have black things on, it is as tall as the houses or taller, and I have a leaf that is in slightly better condition than the one I posted.
