Hello,
I have a houseplant question- hope it’s ok to post in gardening?
my poor Palma has been happy in this spot for almost two years but is suddenly very unhappy.
move recently given a babybio feed but otherwise don’t think anything else has changed.
can anyone help save my beautiful palm?!

Probably too much feed, possibly too much water.
Did you mean 'more recently'?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 14/05/2023 14:44

Have you repotted it recently? It might be potbound and/or the potting soil might need refreshing.

Glitterkitten24 · 14/05/2023 14:47

Sorry I meant ‘I’ve recently’ fed it babybio.

Did you use the diluted or the stuff that you put on the soil?
All my plants suffered after using the topical one

Glitterkitten24 · 14/05/2023 14:49

No it has never been repotted. Sorry for my ignorance but if I take it out of pot, how will I know if it needs a bigger or deeper pot? I could refresh the soil, that’s worth a go.

Exact same thing recently happened to my plant (couldn't remember what it was called - but it's defo same as yours).
My keen gardener friend also thinks it's been overwatered.
Mine is in far worse condition than yours! 💀 😬
Hope I can save it somehow.

Glitterkitten24 · 14/05/2023 14:50

I used one that you stuck into the soil and it slowly dripped in over a few weeks. I didn’t dilute it, it was ready made up.
do you think that might be the problem?

Over watered and needs a larger pot.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 14/05/2023 14:52

If there are so many roots that there is no room for soil or if the soil is all dry and crumbly or if the roots are all twisted around themselves to fit the shape of the pot then it either needs a bigger pot or a soil refresh.

KirstenBlest · 14/05/2023 14:56

To check if it needs repotting, take it out of the ceramic pot. If the roots are growing through the holes in the plastic pot, it is probably time to put it is a slightly bigger plastic pot.

When you repot it, check for any pests.

Houseplants generally prefer to be watered from below, and underwatering is generally less harmful than overwatering.

I questioned the move (which looked like a typo) as you might have moved it to a location it didn't like.

Fuckitydoodah · 14/05/2023 14:59

It definitely needs repotting. The pot it is in is too small. Buy proper houseplant compost. It has plant food in it that lasts a good six months or so.

Thank you all for the benefit of your knowledge and experience- I am very new to plants and gardening but want to learn more and appreciate you taking time to help me!

I’ve repotted it, as well as several other of my plants who had roots hanging out the drainage hole. She’s had a good water and mist and I’ve trimmed the brown bits (but not the yellow) and hopefully she will feel a bit happier.

Thanks for the update. Hope she gets well soon.

Will three yellow part change back to green or should i cut it out?

theboffinsarecoming · 20/02/2025 14:58

No, the yellow parts will not go green again, you might as well remove them.

And stop feeding it. Even houseplants take a bit of a nap in the winter months, so it isn't a good idea to feed them while they are trying to have a rest.
