Fast growing, wide spread climber

We had a passion flower on the back wall of our house which mysteriously died over winter (DH hated it - I suspect that solves the mystery). To be fair it was a bit of a thug and the roots got into the drains, but it did cover the ugly back wall of our very plain house and the flowers were pretty. Anyway - I am looking for something to replace it that I can plan now and will grow fairly quickly and can be trained across the wall (about 7m wide I'd guess). The wall faces south east so plenty of (maybe too much?) sun. No idea about soil! I'd be grateful for any suggestions - thank you 🙂

Climbing hydrangea.
Summer flowering jasmine might be worth a try, but the one we had worked its way into the loft and the bathroom downpipe, so it had to go.
Virginia creeper.
Grapevine.
Wisteria (although they can take years to get going properly)
Climbing rose like 'masquerade'.

It all depends on how much work you are prepared to put in.

Thank you @tailinthejam - I will look into those.

Probably not that much work to be honest! DH more than me, but still not loads.

Argh! We have just planted wisteria - I had no idea it took a long time to establish :(

pinkgown · 10/05/2023 15:37

Our wisteria grew OK, but took years to flower - maybe 10?.

We have clemetis armandii on a south facing wall of our house. It is evergreen and flowers Feb/early March so is lovely in early spring. However it is very vigorous.

Jazzyjezzabelle · 10/05/2023 15:41

The trick to wisteria is not to buy it too little, buy one at least 4 foot tall, ours were flowering with 2 years and went like the clappers.

Not Jasmine. My neighbour has it everywhere, and as a result so do I and I hate the stuff. It is growing inside my garage and in my gutter, as well as the side of the house where I can't get to it, so both sides of the garage, inside and out, all down the drive and now in my flowerbed on the opposite side. I can't get it out properly because I have roses there.

Solanum Alba or Solanum Crispum Glasnevin - grows exceptionally fast and has lovely white or purple blooms (depending on the variety).

I’d also recommend Rosa Banskiae Lutea - spreads very fast with great coverage and lovely yellow blooms in April/May.

Thanks all 🙂 will go and research these suggestions.

Yes agree solanum grows particularly fast (and huge). I had one at the front. I needed to cut it down to paint the fence and it was back to full height in no time. Took it out in the end as it kept encroaching on neighbours property just got too hard to manage. The flowers don’t smell particularly pleasant though!

Jasmine takes a while to get going but once it does can become nuisance especially if you want to remove it!

Clematis Montana grows and flowers very quickly. Put one in last summer and have an abundance of flowers this year.

Jazzyjezzabelle · 12/05/2023 11:34

Solanum is jasmine , no?

LightlySearedontheRealityGrill · 12/05/2023 12:33

Ive been thinking about Akebia quinata for my back wall, although apparently it does need help to cling, I have a trelis. My passionflower doesnt seem to have survived this winter either.

LightlySearedontheRealityGrill · 12/05/2023 12:33

My solanum did not survive either, its a nightshade btw.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/05/2023 14:01

Honeysuckle? Once it gets going it'll climb anything.

DigbyTheDigger · 12/05/2023 14:13

This is making me worry about my two jasmine plants. What's the best way to keep them in check? They're not on a boundary fence.
OP, climbing hydrangea is beautiful, but it's self-clinging so it will stick to windowframes etc.

londonmummy1966 · 12/05/2023 14:29

If you want something in a hurry then a cobea might be worth looking at - they are usually best treated as an annual but if your garden is sheltered they can last the winter.

GeraltsBathtub · 12/05/2023 14:37

I’ve got a south-facing trellis I wanted to cover quickly for privacy - I went for a jasmine, early Dutch honeysuckle and a winter flowering clematis (balearica) and that way there are flowers on it for most of the year. I put them in in 2021 and they’ve pretty much covered the trellis now.

I have Jasmine in a huge tub that is doing well and I'll ceck a check on the height but it's contained , and away from the house .

Virginia Creeper (or might be Boston Ivy ) is gorgeous, climbs well and covers . In Autumn the most amazing red leaves until they fall off

I;m trying again with Passionflower and Clematis , mine both died last year Sad

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/05/2023 19:37

ceck a check - keep a check
