Ant's nest in lawn

Does anybody have any experience of removing an ant's nest in a lawn?

There's been a mound of soil in our lawn for years which we've never bothered with but this year it's got a lot bigger and looks a real mess

We'd like to try and remove it but not too sure how to go about it. It's turning into a bit of an eyesore and also makes mowing the grass awkward now it's got bigger

We also have a young child who likes to play on the grass. I've been but by an ant before and it really hurt, I was surprised

I've read that you can dig it up, put ant killer in it and then fill it back in, has anybody tried that?

We'd also like the grass to grow back eventually or do we need to re-turf that area?

I was always told to pour boiling water down an ants nest but not sure if that would work on grass?

Are they red ants or black ones?

Napoleonsjosephine · 07/05/2023 18:12

Sprinkle it with ant powder?

Dust heavily with talc. They hate it.

We had red ants at one point and I'm sure it said they pop up in unused areas so the best thing to do is use the area and put them off. Might be the same for black ants?

They are red ants but really illusive

Today was the first time I've seen one in maybe 6-8 years of the soil being there

It's like they just live underground and never come up unlike ants in block paving

I don't think boiling water will work in this situation, I did read something about it

The mound is getting bigger and now annoys me, before you couldn't really see it

Sprinkle it with ant powder?

We might have to. One piece of advice was to dig the soil up, sprinkle with ant powder and then put the soil back

Our only concern is our pets and will it damage the grass?

Cut a circle around the mound, turn over the turf to expose the soil and ants. Add boiling water and leave open for a few hours - our local starling flock would swoop in for a feed and then replace the turf back when done. Done a couple of times a year in Spring and summer. We’ve left ours uncovered for a couple of days and the grass has always gone back fine

Thank you, will give this a try

I do this but without the water. Just chop it open, peel back the turf then stay away for bit while the birds come in and eat as many larvae as they can.

Then put it back together again - usually need to take out some soil.
