We had our garden landscaped last year, and theres this bit at the back which you cant really see from the house as its behind the garage. I had it patio'd over for future shed/paddling pool/hot tub type purposes but its actually quite a nice place to chill on the hammock. Dont need a table and/or chairs as already have those in other parts of the garden.
Its just not pretty. It gets some sun but its shaded a lot because its blocked on three sides by brick/fence/brick.

Should I paint the fence a nice bright colour? If so what colour? Go for a subtle green or all out with a hot pink?

I was thinking also about fake ivy trellis thing but I dont want to spend loads.
It needs to be low maintenance! I will only have plants in pots and there is a buddlea there at the mo which survived the winter. I can always get more plants but I am NOT a gardener and Im not sure what.

Why is the fence at that angle....that's all I can see!

HazelTheGreenWitch · 07/05/2023 13:30

It's a nice little corner that should be easy enough to make interesting. But please please please don't get a fake ivy screen as real ivy is so easy to grow! The fake one is yet more plastic to send to landfill when it inevitably fades and turns blue, plus it does zero for wildlife. I'd suggest a big pot (or dig straight into the soil if that's possible, not always much soil on a newbuild garden though), a trellis or wires on the fence, and let a honeysuckle scramble over it. Pretty, smells lovely, and it will be buzzing with bees. And very easy.

Are both brick walls and the fence yours?

We have similar , paved area , the walls either side are NDNs but the wooden fence is ours and the end of our shed

I have clematitis , passionflower (new this year)
Jasmine
Hop
Sweetpeas
(I don't like honeysukle myself)

Trellis on our shed wall .

Our fence is still brown which is fine .

Get huge tubs and plant climbers Grin

Don't get any plastic plants, they look absolutely shit.

I'd get a few small trees in pots, like dwarf apple trees, they take no looking after.

You could also grow a vine in a pot trained against the wall on the right of the picture.

If you are not a gardener, you need drought resistant plants in pots.

Things like lavender and rosemary look and smell nice and are close to indestructible.

Same with sedums like sedum spectabile (nice in late summer/autumn, when most other things fade).

Pelargoniums, cistus and erysimum Bowles' mauve are easy and will grow well in pots, will put up with irregular watering.

Bigger pots need less watering.

Bulbs are pretty much effortless and give quick bright colour, can be hidden away once they are spent. Lilies for summer, tulips for spring (plant them in autumn).

Thank you for the suggestions. I will hit the nursery at the weekend and get some trees and other pots. No fake ivy!

The fence is at that angle @maybeejunesoon because the whole garden was originally at that angle ( many different angles actually - its a new build on a slope ) We had it landscaped to give us flat areas but the fence is as it was. The lawn is still in a slope but its minor compared to how it was! I think it is our fence but I need to check the plans. The garage to the left is the neighbours and the one to the right is ours

Oh no, just checked. Fence not ours after all.

We have a similar set up and a few larger pots one with a lovely olive tree that loves being neglected 🤣
Smaller ones with rosemary, lavender and thyme

As your wall is the one on the right , it looks like it hets good sun , so maybe a trellis and some gorgeous climbers .
I put a climber ( either a Boston Vine or Virginia Creeper ) it is growing on the garden end of our shed -so not in the paved but . When it goes red it is so gorgeous .

As the fence isn;t yours then no Barbie-Meets-Barbara Cartland-Pink Wink

Pergola with hanging baskets (easy to replant or replace each year) and fairy lights

Slatted fence wall on the right with a small patio set

Pots with different height plants down the other wall
