Is this a magnolia?

Thoughts? I’ve just moved it to a sunnier spot. It hasn’t done much in three years..

Looks like it to me although it could also possibly be a poorly rhododendron maybe?

UnDruidlyWords · 07/05/2023 14:14

I agree with what Geneticsbunny said. The leaves look a bit thick for Magnolia at this time of year, though they do tend to start out pale and turn darker as they mature.

I'm not sure either. I've even been out to look at my (huge) Magnolia.

it does look like one but the leaves look a little too glossy and the stem along the back a little too defined. I'm not sure that the leaf placement looks quite right either.

My magnolia leaves are very floppy and soft at the moment.

Looks like a rhododendron in the wrong soil to me. Is it in a pot? If so I'd repot it using ericaceous compost and put it back in the shade.

All of the soil here is ericaceous. It’s woodland and we have a lot of rhododendrons

They look like the leaves on my evergreen magnolia (Kay Parris). The evergreen magnolias' leaves and flowering habits are quite different to the more common deciduous magnolias (eg magnolia soulangeana).

A sunnier spot will probably help, as you guessed. Mine is against the garden wall and gets the afternoon sun, and produces beautiful lemon-scented flowers throughout the summer.

Dannexe · 07/05/2023 18:31

Well it’s in a good sunny spot now so hopefully it will start to do something and I’ll know for sure. It’s about 5 foot at the moment but it’s only ever produced leaves. I don’t think it’s a rhododendron. It looks very different to my rhododendrons and it has a sort of furry bud in the middle of the leaves which I haven’t seen on the rhododendrons.

Looks like my evergreen magnolia, which just doesn't want to grow :P

Dannexe · 07/05/2023 20:06

Maybe if I give it a good feed

Rhododendron leaves tend to look as if they are in whorls at the end of the stem. Don’t think it’s a rhododendron

Cocoaone · 08/05/2023 06:51

It looks like my magnolia grandiflora. Evergreen thick waxy leaves, and it throws up a few big white flowers at a time, all through summer - they smell like lemons.

Ours it's big (6-8m maybe?) In the south facing front garden. The middle of the flower has a fluffy-ish stem

Yes I’m hoping that’s what it is. It’s definitely evergreen and it isn’t a rhododendron.
