Help...am i lovingly growing Buttercups?

Can anyone help me identify this plant please?
I have used a plant identify app which tells me its probably a buttercup.
The thing thats putting me off believing it actually is a buttercup is the planting scheme.
I tend to plant my perennials in groups of three in a triangle shape or in the centre of the border in evenly spaced lines.
These plants are growing exactly like how i would have planted them up.
I have tried digging one up to see the root system. The roots dont run and dont have a main stem root but has white roots more like a bunch of hanging octopus legs.
I would really appreciate any help as i am lovingly tending to these and dont want to be growing fabulous weeds hahaha.

Celandine I think…..

Looks like a creeping buttercup. I quite like all buttercups, as do insects, but they can be invasive.

i have a border full of buttercups!
that looks like them

Lol...thanks everyone for your quick replies..looks like the app was right then. Will need to dig them out. Am gutted as they are really huge plants. Will now have to go online and find something to replace the spaces. Oh no - buying more plants....its a hard job but am sure i will manage 😂😉

Half my garden is buttercups, I love them! Very good for bees too as the flowers don’t close up on cloudy days. But yes, I think that is what you have and they do spread rapidly.

Looks like buttercup to me. Geranium Rosanne as a replacement would get big and give good coverage

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 03/05/2023 19:31

Definitely buttercups, sorry!

Sassielassie · 03/05/2023 21:38

@Oaksilver Thanku. I have ordered a few to fill the gams and give better groundcover 😁

Creeping buttercup. I live opposite fields and I am swamped with them - they spread via root tuber and I must have hundreds. I pull and pull but they snap and then grow again. Bain of my life.

similar look would absolutely be geum for me - I have an orange one - I think it’s called marmalade - which is so lovely and once flowered and cut back, it comes again later in summer. Beautiful plants.

Buttercups. Certainly not celandines, their leaves are different.

Geums are a problem if you already have the wild Geum urbanum (Herb Bennet, Wood Avens) in the garden - until they flower, it’s very hard to tell the difference.

Yes Creeping buttercup (not Field, Bulbous, Goldilocks, Celery leaved etc) - look out for the patterned leaves and the purplish stem bases when weeding them out of, say, a bed full of Geranium.
