North Facing fence, what can I plant ?

I have a large new fence that I hate, it is essential though to keep out next door’s dangerous dog . The garden is South facing, but the front of the fence faces North so it will be shadier now the fence is there. What can I plant to soften the fence ? Fence is a picket style one so some light comes through, but it is also shaded by trees.

Are you looking for things to go on the fence or in front of it?

Some clematis do well in shade. Nelly Moser, for example. So do honeysuckles and climbing hydrangeas. There's a very pretty boston ivy https://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/parthenocissus-henryana/
which does fine in shade.

If you are looking for shrubs/trees to put in front of it, hydrangeas, japanese maples and camellias all like part shade.

Woodland bulbs
Trillium

I think I need something tallish to hide the fence, I do have some ferns in the part of the garden, but the fence is quite high. The clematis sounds good , also honeysuckle. Will look at the Ivy now.
The ground there is moist rather than dry.

Climbers: Climbing hydrangea will be happy, may go nuts
Trachelospermum will do ok, needs wires

shrubs: Sarcococca is evergreen, does well in shade, small lovely scented flowers
Viburnum is also happy in shade, viburnum tinus is a useful one as it’s evergreen and flowering

You may find you need to buy reasonable sized plants. I have a bed against a N facing wall and found baby plants to be hit and miss as they didn’t get enough sun to get established. Clematis in particular I lost several babies and needed to buy bigger ones to get them to survive.

All those sound great. I have about 25 metres of fence. Thanks for tip re size of plants too.
