What should my Raspberries look like?

A few months ago my Dad gave me a few raspberry canes, told me just to plant them out and not to worry that they basically look like dead stalks... they will revive themselves in Spring (hes downsizing his allotment as its come to much for him)

They still look like dead stalks. The strawberries are looking healthy, but the raspberries nothing.

Is this still normal? We are in South Yorkshire for comparison.

(Also we want to add blueberries but haven't seen any plants this year.. is it still to early for them?)

Thank you.

I’m in north east, first time growing raspberries. Bought a plant in clearance last autumn, it has lots of leaves and some tiny blossom buds (not opening any time soon though).

Some canes look dead on mine so will snip out. You might get new growth at the base.

Do you know if it’s autumn or summer fruiting?

It depends on the variety, my summer fruiting canes are covered in green leaves and buds, the autumn fruiting still look like dead sticks with the tiniest hint of green shoots - ask your dad if he knows the variety?

My mum is asking my dad what they are looking like now at the allotment.. they are Kent so I'm guessing wil be a bit ahead.

Unfortunately the plants were not well tended last year die to my dads illness... hence the downsizing. Plus we aren't sure of my soil quality.

Hopefully they are just still dormant. We tried Raspberries last year, local wildlife had other ideas!

I replanted some of mine, trying to move my fruits bushes from a flower border to a raised bed, and replanted a couple of raspberry canes last year, quite late. One has some leaves at the top and the other is still supple but no leaves, though I think it has some new buds which may become leaves. Try bending the top of the stem or the side stems and see if they snap (dead) or bend (still some life in them)
