Hi, I received some roses I ordered from the Crocus online. They have 40% off roses. I paid for next day delivery but Yodel didn’t deliver on Friday and delivered today. When I opened the box, the roses are covered in orange spots. Please can someone identify what they are?

Rust probably.

Make sure you cut off and burn absolutely every affected part, then feed well.

Oh, and take pictures and complain to crocus!

Thanks @TonTonMacoute but can rust appear in stalks as well? I thought it is only in leaves?

Yes, it can.

I wouldn’t be too worried if you need some quite drastic pruning to get rid of all the affected parts. At this time of year it should come back strongly.

I bought a rose last year and had to prune it back to almost one tiny little wisp to get rid of all the dodgy bits, it’s looking quite cheerful now!

It probably is rust, but can you get a closer-up picture of the stems with the orange on? I wouldn't be at all happy with plants arriving in a diseased condition.

I complained the Crocus and waiting for a reply, because of the bank holiday it will be mid next week I guess. I ordered 5 roses and 3 of them have this orange spots. Is it ok to plant the 2 without spots in the garden although they came in the same box?

@TonTonMacoute really sorry to bother you but when you said to prune, it means cutting off all stems as well

I also sprayed all roses with rose clear

No problem!

Yes, you will need to cut off absolutely everything that has rust, leaves and stalks, even if you only end up with the barest framework of rose left.

When you are cutting off stems, cut them as if you are pruning - ie at an angle and just above where a new shoot could form (doesn't matter if one hasn't formed yet). Make sure you keep the plant away from any other roses, and dispose of the clippings in green waste or burn them.

If you can be bothered I would repot too, or maybe just take out the top inch of compost and replace.

Looking again at your photo it really is badly affected, I'm astonished anyone at crocus thought it was okay to send out that plant to a customer! Do come back and let us know how they handle your complaint!

@TonTonMacoute thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Roses are for our new garden, therefore I can definitely get rid of the soil and plant on ground. I was in 2 minds if I should get rid of the all 5 roses to garden bin and ask for a replacement? what do you think please?
I will definitely comeback and let you know how Crocus handles the complaint.

Oh goodness, if the whole order is in that state I would be fuming! I think they should all be replaced, or money back.

I quite like a challenge so would relish the opportunity to rescue the roses and bring them back to health. I did this with a rose from Sarah Raven, but that was only one dud in an order of three. It looks good and healthy now but at one point it was just a tiny stump and I did wonder if it was going to make it.

Thanks @TonTonMacoute .
an update from Crocus, they have been brilliant in handling my complaint. Refunded me fully and offered to collect the roses on Thursday which I accepted.

Thanks for letting me know, it's reassuring that they have stepped up and resolved this properly. I hope they have gone and checked their other roses too!

Good service from Crocus. Never plant something that's possibly infected. Especially if you've just paid for it!
