Peony - can I plant 2 in a pot ? and other questions....

I have 3 peony plants coming up from roots planted in the winter. I am completely new to peony plants. I am moving 1 to a large pot (diameter 70cm). Should I plant just 1 in the pot?

The other one I am going to plant in the garden directly - which I could do with the third one as well.

I am not sure how big the plants will get in the first year and don't want the pot to look empty if it doesn't grow quickly.

Thoughts?

Also

  1. about what time do I need to put a peony support in place?
  2. any tips on the spot in the garden where I should plant them? Its a fairly open garden with rich quick draining soil.

The ones I have are:
Peony 'Shirley Temple'
Peony 'Red Sarah Bernhardt
Peony 'Purple Spider'

One to a pot. You could plant something annual and trailing beneath, say Lobelia

They are likely to outgrow even a very large pot. But will be ok for 3 years or so. feed and water well. They also might not flower the first year, the leaves are stunning though so some trailing annuals as above would look great.
