Insect eggs in compost

I would like to re-use last year's compost. I about a dozen containers which were planted up last year. Looking at the compost there are round light brown balls in there. I think probably some kind of insect eggs? I googled vine weevil eggs and apparently they are only 1mm across. These are more like 3 or 4mm.
If I can't re-use it any tips for what to do with the compost?

Could they be fertiliser granules? They look like small brown balls too, a photo would help.

Are they in clumps or spread individually through the compost? Could they be snail or slug eggs? You could spread the compost out somewhere and let the birds pick over it.

I think this could be right. I once spent ages popping all these 'slug eggs' but it turned out they were from the compost I bought from the garden centreBlush

They could be earthworm eggs. These start out pale green, and get browner as the worms inside grow bigger. They may be empty shells by now.

@NanTheWiser My first thought was fertiliser but discounted it because they seem to pop. So you're probably right

If they are worms or even slugs I will just reuse. If I have a pot with vine weevil grubs in I usually tip that out for the birds. There's rather a lot of this and my back isn't up to it🤣

I think definitely fertiliser! They look like Osmocote granules.

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/04/2023 17:22

Yes, fertiliser.

LangClegsInSpace · 22/04/2023 20:10

Another vote for fertiliser.

There're fertiliser granules...

Spanielsarepainless · 22/04/2023 20:13

...They're...

Great stuff. I can use it again
