Recommendations for pots at front door

Hi all, what does anyone put in pots by their front door? In autumn I had crysanths and they made my heart sing every time I looked at them. I was considering some trees but we get quite a lot of wind so maybe smaller plants? But what would give colour for a long time and not look bedraggled? Would night scented stock be any good? For reference our front door is a pale green and we have a sand coloured stone around it. Thanks for any tips 😊

So in mine I have bright green cordyline, I've two sets for front and aide, one has canna Lillie's the other had red hot pokers. Then filled them at front with petunias, begonias and bacopa.

The steps up to my front door have pots at either side- three steps so six pots in total. There is something uniquely cheering about arriving home (or going out first thing in the morning) and seeing or smelling flowers. In the coldest months, it's especially important for my mental health to have some colour near the house. It's a lovely reminder that the cold won't last for ever, and the brighter weather will return.

I layer bulbs in the pots, so in Spring there are iris reticulata, dwarf daffodils, muscari, anemones, tulips and hyacinths. There are also several large pots of just hyacinths either side of the steps, mostly for the scent.

Later on, these pots will be replaced with ones containing gladioli, trailing nasturtium, dahlias, marigolds or whatever else I have to hand. In the Winter, I have polyanthus, hellebores, bellis perennis and pansies.

The top step used to have a pair of box balls on it, but it's very windy here and they kept getting blown off, so they are now much happier in a border.

I love red geraniums, a few pots of white geraniums, tomato plants and I do sweetpeas up the trellis by the front door. Love my pots!

I would have lavender because it smells so gorgeous - if you keep cutting it back it will keep flowering for a reasonable time. Or rosemary, too.

I have a large pot with a dwarf lilac in it (otherwise I would have a standard ceanothus). I have bulbs around it in the spring planted in a lasagne, hardy geraniums for the summer and violas in the winter. Colour all year round.

How formal is your house? I think that makes a lot of difference. Pots that look right in a street of Georgian townhouses will be different to pots that look right outside a country cottage.

Whatever you go for, I'd consider having a dual (even triple) system with nice outer pots that stay in place all the time, and boring removable inner pots that can be swapped over when the contents starts going over.

Some brilliant suggestions here thank you all so much! I totally agree @BigglyBee about having the colour for mental health. Seeing things in bloom really does lift the spirits. I have hellebores in one of my beds and quite a few winter interest things. Bulbs is a good idea.
@MontyDonsBlueScarf (love your user name) I’d say my house is probably quite formal looking but it’s in the country and quite out of the way. @WellTidy It’s been my dream to grow lilac! Didn’t know you could get dwarf versions, how does it fare over winter?

@seeyouinanotherlifewhenwearebothcats my dwarf lilac fares absolutely fine over winter. I’ve never thought to give it any special protection. I bought it in about 2018 and moved it from the border into the pot at the start of 2022. It is looking good at the moment! I’m pretty sure I got it in a supermarket.

Thanks @WellTidy going to look into this, quite excited now! Absolutely love lilac Smile
