Mushrooms inoculated into log and now I can't remember which type they were... pics

So - maybe 4 years ago I got some mushroom innoculated pegs to knock into a log and grow your own mushrooms. I followed all instruction, right type of wood, properly inserted and sealed, soaked log in water it for required time, then leaned it in shade and nothing at all grew. The log has been languishing at the end of the garden by the compost heap ever since. Today I noticed that it has mushrooms growing from it. But I can't remember which type they were now, and so I can't check if they are the ones I put in or some other potentially poisonous invader.

Ordinarily I would never touch a mushroom found in the wild with a barge pole - but I feel like if I could remember what type the were maybe I'd be safe if these look like they should? They're definitely growing from the peg holes, which are visible as dark brown indents now in the pattern I did them in.

Can anyone help - suggest what type they may be, and would I be insane to eat them?

I think that may have been shiitake - do these look like shiitake mushrooms?

These look like Shiitake to me

Looking online I also think they do. But should I risk eating them? I think, given the circs that I should... but I'm scared. Usually I'm the first to caution against foraged mushroom eating on these types of threads. But these aren't foraged are they - since they look like what in? I'm only worried because it's been outside for so long doing nothing. But apparently it can now fruit for up to 8 years.

I've been frantically googling to see if any wild UK mushrooms could be mistaken for shiitake and I can't find any, but I also can't find any expert saying there aren't any. Argh,

I wouldn't eat without being sure. Any old fungus could have taken root in that time.

Yes - you are right. My mum has talked some sense into me (ie, hysterically pleaded with me no to eat them and offered to buy me lots of shiitake mushrooms so that I won't, bless her).

Thanks for the link, I will take some better pics tomorrow and then post there.
