Weed? Blue flowers, long stem shiny leaves. Popping up everywhere.

My house and garden was a tip when I first bought my home. The garden could not be seen for rubbish, broken furniture and seemingly a thousand broken pots and discarded attempts at planting, underneath all the rubbish.

Every year I find odd things sprouting up but I don’t want to get rid of anything that may be helpful to wildlife or a nice addition. I have these plants creeping across my lawn and I’m every corner. I’m beginning to think they must be a weed or invasive? Photos attached. I’d really appreciate any help 🙏🏻

Spanish bluebell I think, they seem to be everywhere this year

Pootles34 · 20/04/2023 11:44

Yeah I thought bluebell too. I think the spanish ones are a bit thuggish, but they are pretty.

Weed doesn't really mean anything. It's just a flower you don't like/want. If you like it, keep it.

I've been in my house 18 years and I'm still pulling the buggers up!! One or two might be pretty but they're thugs and take over everywhere!!

Lastnamedidntstick · 20/04/2023 11:46

Bluebells :)

I like them so leave them- in the spring they’re all in the borders, then die back for the summer plants to flower.

Dahliasrule · 20/04/2023 11:47

Yes, I agree bluebell and yes can be invasive.

Slowgrowingelm · 20/04/2023 11:48

Ahhh… yes @NoodieRoodie @Pootles34 I’m getting the feeling they’re thugs! I had a few last year (first year of having a lawn) and I was quite happy with them. But they seem to be everywhere this year.

Ideally you should remove them as they are wiping out native bluebells, which are prettier with their hanging bells and scent.

sashagabadon · 20/04/2023 11:50

Spanish bluebells and they are thugs so I would get rid or next year you’ll have a million more. They are nothing like the pretty English bluebells imo

Slowgrowingelm · 20/04/2023 11:51

Thank you all. I love bluebells but I’d rather have some of the local ones growing. I’ll take care of these once the flowers are gone.

Don't let them go to seed.

'Taking care of them' is easier said than done. They bulbs are very deep, about 6".
