Is there such a thing as a smaller version of wisteria? I love love wisteria but believe it's gets very big!

Do you want something that also climbs like a wisteria? Or is it the scent/colour you like?

You can keep wisteria pruned, it doesn’t need to get big.

There are lots of different types of wisteria, the american ones are less vigorous.

Wisteria cultivars are available grafted on a root stock, much as with fruit trees. The vigour of the stock will determine how large the plant gets so seek advice from a wisteria expert if you want a smaller growing plant. As others have said, they can be pruned to keep in check. Pruning is usually done in later summer and again in Feb time.

I love both the colour / scent and how it climbs. But non climbing is also good, thanks.

You can get dwarf wisteria that you can prune and keep small. They do take a few years to establish and flower, but are wonderful.

If you want something smaller that climbs and is fragrant, sweet peas or honeysuckle are both lovely. I always grow sweet peas each year because they make amazing cut flowers too and the more you cut them, the more flowers they grow!!

There is also a type of Buddleja that grows like a bush, but has hanging purple flowers like a wisteria.

We've got one that used to span about 30 feet along a wall. A couple of years ago I cut it back to about a foot high. It survived it well and I keep it in check now.
