This is my first thread although I've been lurking in the Gardening threads for a while.

I'm hoping the plant ID experts are online this evening.
This grassy looking plant has appeared in the front garden over the last six weeks. I can't recall seeing it last year which was the end of a house renovation so admittedly I probably didn't notice it. I began to get to grips with the front garden around September last year at which point this wasn't showing.

A previous thread requesting a similar looking plant to be identified suggested Day Lily but I'm completely clueless. Any ideas?

I hope the pics are clear enough. TIA.

And the close ups confirm bluebell

I’m very sceptical about the plant apps. I understand how they work, but of the many plant app identifications I’ve seen on MN I don’t recall ever seeing one that was correct.

I agree. They basically try to match a photo with a database of images. There's no substitute for a human being who can recognise a large number of different characteristics and account for individual variation. With plants, things like shape of stem and whether or not the leaves have hairy undersides can distinguish between species.

They're a good starting point though if you find something you're completely unfamiliar with.

I think this thread has demonstrated how useless plant apps are - couple of totally wrong matches, plus all the actual humans who know plants on the thread pretty much agreed on bluebells! 😂

Yes, I guess we should be reassured that people are better than machines when it comes to identifying plants! I’m often surprised on MN plant identification threads at how very wide of the mark some of the suggestions can be and guess it’s because well-meaning people are giving far too much credence to (mis)identifications from the various apps.

Thank you all.
I think the general consensus was to leave it be and let it do its thing. 🤞🏾

@TheRealKatnissEverdeen I know you said you didn't want another job, but... once they are flowering, can you please find out whether they are native bluebells, or the Spanish variety? If Spanish, then they need to come out because they are invasive, and also hybridise with the native bluebells. They are threatening the native wild population.

TheSpottedZebra · 16/04/2023 19:00

I don't think they're native bluebells - the leaves look too wide and shiny, and the flowers seem to be all round the stem, not just at one side.

But it will be MUCH easier to tell when they're in full flower!
