AIBU to get the lawnmower out on Easter Saturday?

Neighbours are having a party. With the sort of guests who don’t think they’re having a good time unless their laugh carries 6 doors. Fair enough, it’s a sunny weekend.

And now the bit that’s riled me - I’m just returning from the compost heap when I spot a man standing in my snowdrops, about to insert himself through a thin bit of hedge.

I’m quite happy to throw balls back. I’m happy for someone to come and get their ball if the come in from the drive at the top, and keep to the paths. But to push through the hedge and trample the borders, that’s not on.

I was looking at the lawn this morning thinking “that needs a mow, but I can’t do it on a bank holiday weekend when people are enjoying their gardens”. But now I’m not feeling so charitable

My neighbour started mowing at 9 so I thought of you op

You weren’t having a party yesterday, were you?

Aww that should have said it’s just normal outdoor noise, not ‘not’.

Normal outside noise is birdsong, insects, people enjoying their gardens not too loudly. It’s not lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, patio laying and Stihl saws.

Obviously varies by area! Here it’s normal. Loud music in a garden is annoying but people just maintaining and using their gardens is part of the spring/summer sounds outside in a normal suburb. Obviously not all of them though I guess.

How do people feel about chainsaws? Normal part of Sunday afternoon in the garden? (DH is equally careful about when he cuts logs)

Yes normal part of Sunday afternoons. Not so much at 8 in the morning though

Yes of course you can mow the lawn tomorrow. I love hearing the sound of neighbour's lawnmowers .

Me too, actually.

I guess we are in the minority but there is a real 'sound of summer' feeling to it, for me. Smile

My twat of a NDN decided to mow his lawn (which he is usually too lazy to do and pays a gardener for) whilst my children were trying to sing happy birthday to their Dad after a quite family meal for 5 in our garden.

Therefore I vote YABU and a bit bitter

Easter Sunday - the sun was shining, the patio doors were open and at 2:30pm we were just sitting down to dinner.

My knobhead of a next door neighbour decided to start moving his lawn just as we were sitting down to dinner. Absolutely no thought for anyone else & the noise.

It’s the self entitlement and little thought for anyone else (and the fact that they might not want to listen to your flymo all afternoon) that annoys me.

Exhibity · 12/04/2023 11:50

When are people supposed to mow their lawn then ?

2.30 is quite late for lunch. Maybe he waited until then assuming you would have finished eating and would be half way round the park having a brisk walk.

Do you expect your neighbour to be psychic and automatically know exactly what time you were having dinner so that he could rearrange his day around you?

Cant you see the hypocrisy in calling your neighbour entitled for doing a perfectly normal thing when you are entitled enough to expect that your neighbours to stay in silence all day so that you can eat at whatever time you fancy with the door open?
