What Veg have you sown so far?

I've got tomatoes that are ready to pot-on, sweet corn that's about 3 inches high, parsnips and swedes are just started to shoot ( will sow more later in the season) and will sow runner beans and French climbers directly into the ground tomorrow. All have been started off in a heated propagator in my unheated greenhouse, and then moved onto racks once all seeds have sprouted.

Broad beans were sown directly last November and are just starting to show flower buds, though they've been badly battered by wind over winter.
I will raise some of the toms in the greenhouse, the rest in 20 litre pots outside to prolong the season. I will probably buy a couple of cucumber plants as I've never got them past the two true-leaf stage, always die off.

I cant grow onions, garlic or shallots as my allotment has white onion rot.

I'm in Kent, if that makes any difference.

Tomato and melon seeds. Herb seeds.
Will probably kill them all accidentally 🤣
Potatoes are coming up though! I don't plant them each year, they just look after themselves which is probably why they are still alive.

Surrey.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 08/04/2023 11:26

I'm in Norfolk and have planted potatoes, planted out broad beans (that I started in the greenhouse) and direct sown parsnips. And I have autumn garlic growing as well.

Having spent many years in Scotland I have developed the habit of starting lots of things in the greenhouse in modules. Currently I have 2 types of peas, Brussels sprouts, kale, beetroot and spring onions, which will all be planted out when they reach a decent size. Also parsley, basil and coriander.
French beans, runner beans and climbing French beans will be started in the greenhouse soon.

I have also got tomatoes, chillis and bell peppers, which were started in the heated propagator, to stay in the greenhouse. I will be sowing cucumbers and courgettes in the propagator soon.

I shall direct sow carrots and swede at the beginning of May, and also spinach. Plus radish, salad leaves and more beetroot and spring onions.

Tomato and chilli in the propagator, peas and broad beans in the greenhouse

Tried autumn sown broad beans once, lots of flowers, too early for pollinators, no beans

viques · 08/04/2023 20:05

Garlic looks good, bought half price early potatoes yesterday so put them out this pm and planted out some mangetoute as well. Am planning to start off some tomato seeds saved from last year, and some rainbow chard and French beans tomorrow. I might also get a pot of mixed salad leaves going as well, I feel lucky.

Also going to get nasturtiums, sweet peas ( memo to self put to soak NOW) and morning glory going as well.

WormEater · 08/04/2023 20:07

Nothing yet. In the very, very, cold north.
Cleaned out the greenhouse last week.
Going to get some things started this coming week.

Custardbanana · 08/04/2023 20:12

Garlic and little gems already in the ground. Beetroot, kale, cauliflower in the modules. Peas but I only grow them for the shoots not the pods. Only 1 tomato and 1 cucumber have sprouted and survived. Squash and courgettes have just popped up. I'll be sowing some carrots, rocket, basil, dill, coriander tomorrow.

ladyinthecampervan · 08/04/2023 20:13

No greenhouse here so I’m limited to my kitchen window sill.
Onions & garlic went in at the back end of last year. I’ve got carrots (various varieties) & beetroot on the go outside & tomatoes & chillis inside.
oh, and a pumpkin at the request of DC2!

StaySpicy · 08/04/2023 20:14

Oxfordshire. Just started with potatoes and carrots in the raised beds, as well as some rocket/lettuce/mixed leaves. I put some peas in a trough but I'm dubious about them. Planted out the broad bean seedlings and we've got pumpkins and courgettes just starting to come up on the sunny windowsill.

SBAM · 08/04/2023 20:14

Direct sown in raised beds - red cabbage, carrots, leeks, broccoli, Swiss chard and peas. Almost everything is popping up now except the peas 🤔

Sown in the (unheated) greenhouse in unheated propagators - aubergines, pumpkin, peppers, tomatoes, sweetcorn, cucumbers, basil, melons and squash.
No sign of any pepper seedlings, and only 3/8 sweetcorn germinated so I might see about sowing more.
Some of the squash and cucumber look like they’ve overheated in the warm weather the last few days so I might need to get my greenhouse shading sorted asap.

Im in the west of Essex.

StaySpicy · 08/04/2023 20:15

Interesting, @SBAM - I haven't started the cucumbers or peppers yet but your post has made me think maybe I should!

AdoraBell · 08/04/2023 20:17

Tomatoes and carrots. These are inside because of rabbits. Just planted potatoes outside.

Ilovelurchers · 08/04/2023 20:25

Potatoes, carrots, parsnips, leeks, Pak choi, onions all in the ground. Oh, and i planted a rhubarb. First year of having an allotment of my own!

Basil and courgettes in the heated propagator.

Various more to plant when we get back off holiday. So excited!

SBAM · 08/04/2023 20:28

@StaySpicy please don’t think I’m some kind of expert - I’m just keen to get things going, and give myself chance to do it over if they don’t germinate.

Toomanybooks22 · 08/04/2023 20:32

French dwarf beans, leeks, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts and calabrese broccoli. French beans came on really fast as did the broccoli both re-potted and in conservatory, still waiting for the rest to grow a bit more.

Neverknowinglysensible · 08/04/2023 20:44

First year of having a (tiny) veg patch. Very excited and am going to try the square foot method with companion planing. For this first year I’ve cheated slightly and bought cauliflower, broccoli, kale, courgette and spring onion seedlings which I’ve potted on today and are in the unheated potting shed. I’ve also bought flat leaf parsley, coriander and chives from the supermarket and have attempted to divide them to grow on. They don’t look very healthy currently- I may have cut them a bit too low down.
Planted garlic in late autumn - bastard bunnies dug up most of it but a couple are grimly hanging on in there. Today I’ve direct sown radishes amongst the garlic and have sown climbing beans and ornamental gourds in modules as well as lettuce in a heated propagator. I have carrot, rocket, nasturtium and spring cabbage seeds to sow later on and have some marigold seedlings to pot on tomorrow

shivbo2014 · 08/04/2023 20:49

I've got garlic and onions planted them in autumn. Just put my potatoes in. Sown sprouts, cabbage, cucumber, leeks broad beans, and luffa seeds indoors. Will sow Swiss chard, lettuce, kale, spinach directly this week and sow runner beans, sweetcorn and peas indoors next week. My first full year on my allotment as I got it last May. Also have blackberries, Raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries and grapes that were planted last autumn.

Netcam · 08/04/2023 20:58

Very late this year, but so is the sun and warmth it seems. We are in East Anglia. We have quite a lot of stuff that overwintered and is developing now: Spring green cabbages, leaf beet, broad beans, garlic, onions, celeriac, even some experimental carrots that survived. A couple of weeks ago we sowed more carrots in pots in the mini greenhouse, potatoes in pots outside and mange tout and more leaf beet in the ground. Probably need to think about what seeds to start next in the mini greenhouse, but much too early to think about cucumbers, beans and courgettes that we'll sow in the house on the sunny windowsills.

earsup · 08/04/2023 21:15

tomatoes and cucumber are now out the propogator, the cucumber is a bit wobbly, stems are not firm and it flops about but a few look in better shape, raddish to go in soon....cleared out greenhouse today so will move them in this week, not usually very good with veg so dont do a lot of it. But my local b and q shop has already reduced a load of veg plants so might get a few tomw....box of 9 toms etc for £1.40.

thefatpotato · 08/04/2023 21:15

I have some tomatoes about 3 inches tall, peas, French beans, cucumber, peppers (I saved the seeds from a store-bought so don't expect anything from them, it was just an experiment!). This is my first year with a garden so no idea what I'm doing, but having some fun experimenting.

Put some radish, lettuce, carrots, and beets in the soil yesterday.

London.

user1496146479 · 08/04/2023 21:41

Tomatoes, peppers, broccoli & spinach sown about 3 weeks ago in glass house.
Peppers never germinated, tried again today.
Carrots sown today.
Strawberries woken up from winter sleep!

YorkshireIndie · 09/04/2023 05:00

At the moment shallots, tomatoes and cucumbers. We decided as a family not to do potatoes, board beans or carrots. They take forever and then we do not seem to have much luck. I planted purple sprouting broccoli last year and ignored it so but it has survived and is ready to pick

Lakeyloo · 11/04/2023 15:30

Sweet peas, Mange Tout, Pak Choi, lettuce, Onions and Elephant garlic all out (onions and garlic since the end of last year, the rest about 3 weeks) 1st earlies just starting to show. Direct sown some carrots, radish, spring onions and beetroot, waiting for them to show but only popped them in last week. Red and normal cabbage, tenderstem, sprouts, more Pak Choi and kale all hardening off in the temporary greenhouse in the garden. Tomatoes, Cucumber, Courgettes, Peppers, Sweetcorn, Sunflowers and Cosmos all at various stages in the conservatory. Will direct sow runner and dwarf French beans in the next couple of weeks. Just wish it would stop raining !! (West Sussex coast, so hopefully done with frosts !)

Ifailed · 11/04/2023 15:40

The growing wind has put the kybosh on hardening off sweet corn, so I've had to put them back in the greenhouse.

Am jealous of the people with garlic, onions, leeks etc as my allotment plot has onion white rot, however I did put some diced fresh garlic down last spring to try and deter local cat's crapping in my small back garden, and they are developing nicely into plants in their own right.
